25-11-35 TOMB NO. 42 39

Start opening the dromos of tomb 42 39. The fill contains much ash and burnt earth, but it seems to have been filled in from elsewhere, rather than burned in the dromos, as the burnt material is uneven and apparently mixed, and to door the earth is not burnt.

27-11-35 The dromos was filled with dark sea-stones, and the door was filled with the same. Start opening the chamber Photo 6 of dromos before opening chamber.

This is a clear case of original cremation. The body was found cremated in pot no. 3. There were no traces of bone on the floor of the chamber of; the arrangement of the pots indicated that there had not been a skeleton on the floor, and the tomb was too small to have held one. It seems that the body was burnt near the tomb, and that after it was placed in the amphora the tomb was closed, the ashes of the pyre were thrown into the dromos, and it was then filled. It was an adult man. Only one burial period.
