Dec 1E. Room (plans pp 2 and 26)

What on previous pages was called 'drain a' (S side) is really no drain at all but the rather sinuous N face of S wall of complex, Wall "C"

It is c. 3.90 m S of N wall at E end, c. 4.20 m S " " at cistern II. Its base is 1.35 m. wide, the next course above 1.05 m. wide, the base extending outward to the S. On level with the base is a fairly good fl. of small stones and earth

This may be, and probably is a rebuilding and original wall was only 0.70 m. wide, as lowest portion next to E Wall of W Room measures; its S face in line with lower course

In digging down to "good fl. to S of this wall find nothing datable, but in a little NE cor at "F" (plan p. 2) digs below this and find Roman C shard and frag. of lamp type XXXVIII.

From South Court one small coin (drawing) C 3179

Wall "C" as seen at W end probably represents earliest phase of this complex.

Dec. 1Center rooms, (area between drains "β" & "γ", Walls G and "E" expanded from p. 23 top.)

The finds from here, from c. 20 cm. below top of drain "β" to the uncovering of drain "δ" (c. 50 cm. in depth) include:

only 2 sherds of coarse ridged ware - much plain thin with low collared neck

1 shard "Pergamene" much glass 1 high-necked lipless bottle (see similar item p. 11) stemmed ware et al. (all saved)

1 melon bead similar to that on p. 24. Mi 547

Through out I have noted more glass than I have ever seen in an excavation before, but attributed this to fact that this is my first experience in digging in the Roman period.

It now occurs to me that insted of the "factory" or "mint" being a metal working establishment it may have been a glass factory. The analysis of some of the slag found may answer the question.
