… but only rough ones removed, from foot to bucket size in fair quantity besides smaller ones. About 1 bucket full of sherds. Coins F 1995 & 1997. A little over 1/2 bucket tiles which I am stacking at 4.00 Page 3026 s. of S. wall and on wall running north south at 11.00 m. e. of w. wall of SE Bldg. Worked blocks not yet removed. 2 figurinefrags. F 1998. No other finds. 14-18 March 52. Dug intermittently with team of 5 men from 14 March - 18 March (rain interrupting work) south of S. wall of SE Bldg. - debris only - many rough stones averaging between fist and foot in size but some larger - loose dark surface soil. Area cleared between S. wall & fence. No tiles & very few sherds - a surprising factor. Page 3032 19-21 March. Finished removing 3.00-5.00 m. s. of S. Bldg. 39.00-43.60 east of west wall. 2633-2, loose darkish soil, very few stones - none larger than fist size - apparently all fill - no debris. About 1/2 bucket sherds - 4 tile frags. which I am throwing out. One coin F 1999. No other finds. 24 March 52. Removed 00-1.50 m. s. of S. Bldg. 00-1.00 m. e. of w. wall, 3012-2, dark reddish soil, loose, quite clean with hardly any stones at all. 2 handfuls of sherds - no tiles. No other finds. Dug down to bedrock. The curb of the road (probably a road curb) just off s.w. corner of bldg. stood when foundation for S. wall was constructed, but the wall at 2.00 m. s. of S. wall & approx. parallel with it goes under the road & road curb. It is clear that it is earlier than this period of the road. This wall may be precinct wall before construction of S. Bldg. 25 March. Holiday. Page 3034 26 & 27 March. Removed surface soil s. of S. Bldg. 3.70-6.30 m. and 0-2.00 m. west of w. wall (line of w. wall) dark loose soil - practically no stones removed. See Film 166-2. No tiles. 3 sherds - thrown out. March 28 & 29. Removed S. Bldg. corridor 3 (alley 3) 00-0.60 m. n. of S. wall, 3031-1, not hard but fairly compact stratum of both reddish & dark soil mixed throughout moderate number stones averaging between walnut & fist size. 5 small tile frags. - thrown out - 4 sherds. Broneer type XXVIII lamp (F 2000) No other finds.xxxxxxxxxx The dark patches in the soil I see now is due to charcoal - quite a bit of it. Removed same area 3031-2, more homogeneous stratum than 3031-1, about four stones fist size. The rest - not very many - averaged about walnut size. Dull brown soil, 2 handfuls of sherds. 1 pipe frag. F 2001, small box thin blown glass F 2002. No tiles. No other finds. See Film 166-5. Page 3038 31 March 52. Removed same place 3031-3 loose slightly redder brown soil, fair number of stones averaging between egg and fist size, handful of sherds, 1 Hellenistic but no ribbed - no tiles - no other finds. Removed same area but 0.60-1.60, 3031-1, same as 0.60 - 1.60 but with fewer stones and smaller. Handful sherds. 2 bones (animal-sheep) placed in sherd bag - 2 tile frags. thrown out. 1 ter. lamp frag. F 2003. Page 3052 1 April 52. Removed same area 3031-2, like that removed from 0.00-0.60 n. of S. wall. About 1/8 bucket sherds, 1 small roof tile frag., thrown out, 2 iron frags. placed in box with sherds. No other finds. 3031-3, loose 2 Apr. 52. Removed S. Bldg., cor. 3, 0.60-1.60 m. n. of S. wall, reddish brown soil with fair number of stones - all rough ones averaging not much more than egg size but two up to foot size. No tiles, only 1 piece charcoal unlike 1 & 2, both of which contained charcoal in this area. About 1/6 bucket sherds - none ribbed - 1 Hellenistic - 1 piece lead placed in sherd bag. No other finds. 3 Apr. 52. Removed same area 3031-4(a), loose, some reddish brown soil some dark brown - no charcoal - relatively more stones than in 3031-3 - rough ones - larger than above, two buckets of larger stones foot size - rest nearer egg size. About 1/3 bucket sherds - no other finds. Page 3056 Removed same area also 3031-4(b) - same as 4(a) except no foot size stones - but all small averaging egg size. 9 sherds only. No other finds. 4 Apr. 52. Stratum 3031-4(b) terminates with layer consisting almost wholly of chavara - xxxxx dug a little into this to find foot of foundation of west wall of room 3. From here at foot of wall found 3 sherds. Page 3062 16 May 52. Removed 00-4.50 m. s. of S. Bldg. from 49.80 m.
