… of blue pebbles, good quantity of rough stones from fist to foot size on horizon average - soil mostly reddish - most of strat. probably debris and decomposed building material. Removed at least 3 wheelbarrow loads of roof tiles and about 5 buckets of sherds. From 4.50 m. s. of s. Bldg. to fence removed about 3 more buckets of sherds and wheelbarrow load of roof tiles. Here the soil was not so red and there was very little gravel (blue pebbles) and fewer limestones. In this area 00-6.50 m. s. of S. Bldg. removed also 3 boxes of broken lamp frags. F 2004, and 2 boxes of glass frags. F 2005, and 12 coins F 2006-17. Have stacked roof tiles close to wire fence opposite door of guard house near gate. F 2014-17 were found at bottom of stratum. The stratum has not changed but I am levelling off anyway, as we are now below the level of the foundation course both of the S. & SE Bldgs. See Film 167-19.

17 May52. 3 men - 3 hours only as rained lightly almost all day. Removed 00-2.90 m. east of s.w. corner of SE Bldg., 0-4.35 m. s. of s. wall, p. 3071-1 (same as p. 2641-3 in level) loose reddish soil with many rough stones averaging fist to foot in size, no gravel here, about 1 1/2 wheelbarrow loads of roof tiles and 1/3 bucket of sherds. The stratum appears to consist mostly of debris. From here came also F 2018 (lamp) and glass frags. which have placed in box with sherds. No other finds. Have stacked tiles at 2.30 m. east of s.w. corner of SE Bldg. See Film 167-20.

26 May52. Removed 0-4.00 m. south of south of ES. Bldg., 44.00-48.65 m. east of west wall p. 2613-3. Good number of stones averaging between fist and foot size, fair amount of small pebbles - gravel - slightly reddish brown soil - a loose stratum - probably debris, but might be late fill - about 1 1/2 buckets of sherds, about 2 buckets of roof tiles. Box of glass frags. F 2019 and lamp frags. F 2020. No other finds. Stacking tiles at 48.60 m. east of w. wall up against s. wall of S. Bldg. See Film 167 nos. 21 & 22.

10 June52. Removed below level of fallen stone jamb (Film 168-19) fill of debris between north wall, S. Bldg. and e. platform of exedra 4, p. 3075-1, fairly clean stratum of moderately large reddish brown soil with hardly any stones none larger than walnut size, 7 small tile frags. which I am stacking by door; 1/10 bucket sherds, 4 pieces of lime concrete which I am stacking with tiles. Frags. Broneer type XXVIII lamp F 2022, coin F 2021, and glass frags. which I am placing in box in sherd bag.
