Diary page 15^^44 (cont'd) only today (June 20th) including foremen, sherd boy, and guard (Michalis, Stelis and Costas). The workmen are Mehmet, Athonis, Nicolas, Nicodemus. Have been xit through all sherds marking on back of tags what proportion of each bag I have thrown out. Have kept everything from cistern and have washed tiles also from cistern. These are now piled up under large cerob tree north of South Building. Have checked all coins. None missing save one from sieve F which was found missing from glass in solution of alcohol, a small coin which would have been most likely illegible.
Page 1552 21 and 22 June. Drain from room 10 & re-enforcing wall. It is now my opinion that the so called re-enforcing walls of the Bath are re-enforcing walls in fact and that they were constructed in the 4th century A.D. after an earthquake which caused some damage to the building. The one east of room 10 was constructed over a large drain which served to drain water from room 10 (s.e. room). After the construction of the re-enforcing wall a new, very much smaller drain was excavated within the wall connecting up with a terracotta pipe line still in situ just east of doorway of room 10 (the doorway leading to room 1). The excavation in the east face of the east wall of room 1 above the level of the later drain appears to be an explorative one, as it can have served no useful purpose, it being too high for a drain at any period. See Film 127-32. In this area
Page 1554 east of room 1 I dug today p. 1203-4, a depression in the bedrock which served probably to carry off the water from the drains. Very few sherds, no bricks or tiles, few stones, a soft stratum. Also digging p. 1547-3 and 4, north of large plunge bath. 3 is a very hard stratum consisting of many very small rough stones. It may well be earlier than the drains from the plunge baths - no ribbed wares noticed though pottery has not been washed. 1547-2 produced much destruction period (middle 4th century) pottery. 1547-4 was a very soft stratum with very few stones, all small rough ones. Stratum 3 is softer as one gets deeper - possibly on the top was a rough trodden level in antiquity. Two drains - terracotta pipe lines - one above the other - found in the north wall
Page 1556 of the unexcavated room east of the large plunge bath. Appear in north face of wall which is the s. line of my trench p. 1547. As the one is above the other the indication is that the unexcavated room will have had two floors - an earlier and a later one. Digging out only part of 1547-3. Room 3. Michalis restoring south wall, south bay, of room 3, in preparation for temporary roof, under Mr. Hill's direction. Dump. Continuing to remove dump 18.00 north of Bath.
Page 1560 23 and 24 June. Room 3. Michalis under Mr. Hill's direction continues restoring south wall in west bay of room 3 to carry course of moulded blocks. Dump. Continuing to remove dump 18.00 m. north of Bath. Cleaning walls here and there to complete our plan of the Bath. E. precinct walls. Dug between east precinct walls. 0-2.00 m. east of inner precinct wall, south 7.00-10.00, under debris a little below average level of wall, to bedrock. All fill - no debris - reddish earth, few stones - all small rough ones. No tiles, only few sherds, some figurines placed in same bag with sherds. Dug also west of outer east precinct wall 0-1.00 m. and 8.00-9.00 m. south of s.e. corner of Temple B precinct. Fill under debris 6 sherds only - no tiles - reddish earth, few rough stones - small ones only. Dug a little immediately north of s.e. corner of Temple B precinct to find terracotta pipe line coming from cistern 2, north of Temple A. Few nondescript sherds thrown out.
