north side (counting from west) hypocaust, room 2. See Mr. Hill's notes. Continuing to remove dump south of bath, evening off with a scoop the north edge of it.

Street 1. Continued removing debris over bedrock west of Street 1 as yesterday.

Drain to plunge baths. Dug north of large plunge bath and east of small plunge bath to find drain that served both. See section p. 1259.

and Film 126-29. Found drain with a cover block, which catered to both plunge baths.

Large plunge bath. Yesterday and again today washed large plunge bath with a weak solution of hydrochloric acid to find that the whole is in color or was so. Most of it is covered with a thin coating of adhesive lime which is very difficult to remove. I find now that the tesserae are white and the color is due to paint. Great care therefore must be taken in removing the lime deposit to avoid removing the color with it.

16th June'49 and 17th June. Bath S. of room 8. Removing debris left over floor for wheelbarrows, s. of east end of room 8. See Film 127-17. Removed soil clogging up drains from both plunge baths. No finds from debri parts under walls. Largest stones found about 1/3 fist

size.

Room 2. Mehmet continues digging out room 2 hypocaust at foot of walls in s.w. corner of room. Found F 727 and F 728 on dark stratum over floor - an accumulation dating from the hypocaust's last period of use as such.

Dump. Continuing to remove north section of dump southeast of large plunge bath. Removing debris just outside s.e. corner of room 1 (Bath). See Film 127-15 and F 729. Also Film 127-18.

Precinct walls. Removing surface soil between parallel east precinct wall, south 20-25 as measured from s.e. corner of Temple B precinct, dark loose soil with few stones only - small rough ones.

18 June49, also 20th June. Continued removing north edge of dump south of room 8 of bath. Also removing dump 18.00 m. north of Bath.

Bath E. of room 1 drain from room 10. Removing 1533-2, immediately north of small plunge bath and east of room 1 in search of drain leading from room 10 (e. of doorway of room 10, - doorway leading to room 1. Stratum 1 and 2 are separated by a very narrow fill of gypsum and small stones - a hard mass. Stratum 2 is quite clean, dull brown soil with scarcely any stones. This fill, I find today (June 20th) extends under the re-enforcing wall of the east wall of room 1. This is an indication that when the reenforcing wall was constructed the drain went out of use. The reenforcing wall, as I have called it does not appear to be strong enough to have supported anything. If it were constructed to keep the heat in the hypocausts, which seems unlikely, it should be contemporaneous with the drain which presumably belongs to the bath

when still in use as such. This presents a problem. Have continued to excavate within wall and with a crowbar have made connection with drain pipe leading from room 10. It is perfectly possible that the reenforcing wall was contemporaneous with use of drain. The stones of the wall over the drain appear secure enough still, after removing the earth, which may have come in after the construction of the wall. As the wall is stronger to right and left of the drain it may still prove to be a reenforcing wall in fact. Water poured into pipe in room 10 flows into drain under wall and east of the Bath.

Room 2. Michalis, foreman, repairing pillars in hypocaust of room 2, 2 in center opposite flue leading from room 3 on edge of floor of room 2 (west edge). Supporting other weak

points with wooden posts wedged in between hypocaust floor and ceiling. 7 men
