June 10and 11. Cistern 3. Finished clearing cistern 3 leaving sample of stratum 9, 0-65 cm. from walls. See section p. 1467. No thin blown glass or lamp fragments from settling pit. All earth removed has been sieved. Coin F 706 found in strained soil from 1467-10. It has a bevelled edge and is almost certainly Ptolemaic. Two coins (F 699 and 706) both probably Ptolemaic and one stamped amphora handle have come from the settling pit. These and the absence of Roman lamps and thin blown glass would indicate a pre-Imperial date for the last period of use. All soil in 9 not yet strained. 8 has both thin blown glass and Roman lamps. Room 2 hypocaust. Mehmet continues to dig out west end of room 2 hypocaust Found in niche made by brick pilasters immediately south of flue leading from room 3 hypocaust 2 bronze fittings F 705. Dump. Continuing to removedump 10 m. north of bath. Room 8. Finished clearing debris down to foundation of floor at west end of room 8. See Film 126-13 and 15. Late Imperial ribbed pottery (4th century). Dump. Continued removing dump 3.00 m. south of large plunge bath. Room 3. Continuing to repair north wall of room 3 as yesterday.

13 June49. Street 1. Removing upper debris of large blocks mt left in area trench - Street 1, Tau-Phi, west 0-6, and debris below blocks. See Film 126-22-25 incl. Dump. Continuing to remove old dump 10.00 m. north of Bath. Doorways rooms 1-10. Removed upper fill in doorway between rooms 1 and 11. This was a loose, soft fill - or rather debris containing many worked blocks. See Film [illegible] 126-27. See also Film 126-20, 21 & 26. This contained no sherds or other finds - only tiles - or rather fragments of bricks. The lower fill was a hard strat. of decomposed bldg. matter containing chunks of plaster (lime plaster) and concrete (lime concrete with large gray pebbles like that found in fill under late floor in room 4), bricks and three nondescript coarse ware sherds which have been placed with bricks. Room 2 Mehmet under Mr. Hill's direction digging out room 2 hypocaust at base of north wall, west end. See Mr. Hill's notes.

14 June49. Continuing in Street 1, west, as yesterday. Inscribed block found here, F 721.See Film 126-28 in debris lying on loose brown earth. Cistern 3. Have been over all finds from cistern 3 and note that whereas there are a great quantity of Roman 1st century A.D. lamps in 1369-1-8 and a great amount of thin blown glass there are no lamps below 8 and only a few frags. of thin blown glass. This was found in 9 only, and its presence can be explained by infiltration down into the upper part of 9 from 8. There was none in 10, 11, or 12. Neither thin blown glass nor Bronzer type XXII

lamps to the best of my knowledge come in before the principate of Augustus at the very earliest, and are in common use much later and at least until the middle of the 1st century A.D. As stratum 9 was the first real stratum after one, 2-8 incl. being all the same and obviously a 1st century A.D. dump it is fairly safe to assume, I think, that 9-12 incl. belong to an earlier period, and is an accumulation dating from the last period of use. That the top of 9 was level shows that there was water in the cistern at the time of this accumulation. Hellenistic pottery and 2 Ptolemaic coins in the settling pit (10-12 incl.) and the absence of Imperial lamps and thin blown glass indicate a period as early as the 3rd quarter of the 1st century B.C. With the exception of a few sherds only including Cnidian amphora handles almost all sherds in settling pit appear to be of local Curium wares. The cistern and settling pit should produce many at least half-complete pots. A Rhodian stamped amphora handle came from 11, F 700. Dump. Continuing to remove old dump 10.00 m. north of Bath.
