… probably a dump which was thrown in here to make up part of fill. The same dark soil was found from 0-0.02 m. west of wall but only very near the rockcut wall - farther west it was red, loose with small stones - not very many - all rough ones. From black soil removed 3/4 bucket sherds and from red soil about 1/10 of bucket only. No tiles. No finds. Tiles from 1769-3, 6 small frags. I have placed on rock cut wall. Tiles from 1769-3(b) I have placed west of rock-cut wall on bedrock.
14 June50. J. & J. Brinton arrived from Beirut last night for a visit bringing young J.B. with them.
Removed about 10 days ago SE Bldg. room 1, 1685-3, about 0-.45 opposite door to portico, loose reddishssoil with many rough stones all sizes up to nearly bucket size - all debris - mainly fallen walls - about 1 1/2 bucket sherds and 2 buckets of tiles. Placed tiles on debris not yet removed just to north of doorway. From here came F 1141-2. Removed also same area about 1/8 bucket sherds from floor below 1685-3 and about 1 bucket of tiles which I have placed on the floor immediately to west of threshhold. A few nondescript badly corroded iron frags. thrown out. Removed SE Bldg. room 1, south side, 1687-3, debris over what appears to have been an approx. floor level, loose reddish marik soil, many rough stones up to bucket size. 1/8 bucket sherds and over 1/2 bucket tiles which I have placed on wall dividing center of room from south side at E 4.00. From here came F 1337.
15 June50. Removed SE Bldg. E 24-28, S 0-11.50; N 0-2, 2173-1, loose dull brown soil, many small rough stones averaging about fist size to 1/2 bucket size; a little over a bucket of sherds, and about 3 buckets of tiles which I have stacked up on wall at E 24, S 6. From here came F 1338-9. Throw out 3 small glass frags. and small nondescript metal frag. No other finds. Before removing 2173-1 removed turf to [strikethrough: xxxxxxxxxxxxxx] depth of 2 or 3 centimeters. The bottom of 2173-1 appears to be a ground level. This is about certain as it is the level upon which all the debris here fell. Rem ved SE Bldg. 0-0.40 east of court, S 0-6, N 0-4, debris of rough stones from fallen wall, small ones, to depth of 0.18 m. below top of east stylobate - reddish fairly compact soil; about 1/3 bucket of sherds and about 1 1/2 buckets
of tiles which I am stacking on stylobate at S 5.00. Removed SE Bldg. s.e. portico S 11.50-14.50; E 20-24, 2037-3 many rough stones, debris, ranging mostly from fist to 1/2 bucket size, light colored slightly reddish soil, fairly compact, nearly 1 bucket of sherds and about 2 buckets of tiles which I have stacked up at E 24 on meeting of walls - S 11.50. From here coins F 1340-1. Throw out nondescript lead frag. No other finds. Removed coin F 1342 from small trial trench near pipe line to Bath. Removed SE Bldg. small trial trench just s. of n. wall E 9-10, N 8 to wall lower debris about 1/8 bucket sherds and about 1 bucket tiles which I have placed at bottom of trench. From here came F 1345.

Temple A, E. cella, E. side, N 0-4, cleaned some soil left over bedrock; most of it red and compact, few small rough stones. Removed handful of sherds but it is possible some of these may have fallen or filtered in from above - 1707-4. No tiles. All sherds seen, however, to have come from red soil over bedrock.
Removed same cella, center, N 12.20-16.00, 1767-2(y)x? what appears to be a footing trench dug in antiquity along the west wall of the nave to construct this wall. This trench is very narrow but cuts into the chavara fill of strat. 2 (1767-2), loose brown soil with few small stones. Removed from trench handful of sherds only. No tiles. No other finds. One crude hand made head ter. figurine placed with sherds.
