Diary page 2219 16 June 50. Removed Temple A, west cella, center, 1905-2, loose dull brown soil, many rough stones, most of which are about fist size - none larger than foot size; about 1/2 bucket of sherds and about 3/8 bucket of tiles only. No other finds. N 3-5 was dug before war. 1903-2 is xxxxx strat. above early wall. Box of animal bones F 1345. Have placed tile frags. on early wall at about 1.00 m. north of south wall. Sieved 1907-2 here and removed about 1/10 bucket sherds. No other finds. Removed E. cella, w. aisle, 1973-4, N 0-3.50, red soil, fair number of xxxxxx stones from fist to bucket size, loose fill; about 1/10 bucket sherds. No tiles. No other finds. Also sieved this fill and removed an additional 1/10 bucket sherds. Removed also same aisle N 9.50-12.75, 1973-4, red soil, fairly compact, stones fist to foot size, rough ones only; 1/4 bucket of

Page 2220 sherds; one figurine frag. and one tile frag. both of which I have placed in sherd bag. From here came also F 1346, 3 lamp frags - 2 of pinched saucer type, 1 of doubtful type if a lamp. Removed from sieve same strat., red soil, F 1347, coin, N 9.50-12.75, and about 3/8 bag sherds. Removed from sieve west cella, w. aisle, 1/2 bucket sherds, and box of animal bones, 2019-5, N 0-8. Bones in sherd bag. Removed also strat. 4, N 0-8, 1/2 bucket sherds and animal bones in box in sherd bag. Some time ago removed w. of Temple A, room 1, 1771-2, 0.56-0.96 below approx. floor level. W. of Temple A 2.75-3.70 m. Nearly 1/2 bucket sherds. Removed room 5, s.w. corner, 0-0.50 n. of s. wall and 0-0.80 e. of w. wall 2223-1, loose reddish soil with

Page 2222 very few small rough stones, all fill immediately under what appears to have been a floor level about 1/10 bucket of sherds, no tiles. Removed also 2223-2, also reddish soil but with more rough stones averaging about fist size. Also about 1/10 bucket sherds. No tiles. All fill. From here came F 1350. Removed along south wall of room, 0-0.35 n. of s. wall, 3.00-5.60 east of west wall, also 2223-1, about 1 bucket sherds and about 1/4 bucket tiles. Reddish soil, fairly compact, few rough small stones. Removed also same area 2223-2, same as 1 but with more rough stones; 1/4 bucket sherds, 3 tile frags., and 5 frags. of water pipe. Have placed those together at bottom of trench in line of water pipe line. Haved placed tiles from 1 at east end of trench. Removed also same room 222 2225-1 over pipe line and 0-0.90 west of east wall

Page 2224 and 1.95-xx3.45 north of south wall; fairly compact reddish soil, small rough stones up to foot size, about 1/2 bucket of sherds and 1/8 bucket of tiles, which I have placed on pipe line. From here came ter. lamp, F 1351 found on pipeline. Removed also from same room handful of sherds among fallen stones & debris immediately south of stairway to room to north. About 1/5 bucket of tiles which I have placed with other tiles from room 5 on s.w. corner of stairway. Removed from sieve, room 3, 1939-9, about 1/10 bucket of sherds. Removed also from sieve 1939-10 handful of sherds. No other finds from sieve, these strata. Removed over bedrock 1939-10 red, fairly compact soil, moderate amount stones from fist to 1/2 bucket size, handful of sherds in box; no tiles. No other finds.

Page 2228 Removed 0.38 - 0.80 m. west of W. Bldg. a trench to find water pipe line to depth of 0.87 m. below most western block in wall dividing rooms 3 and 4 of W. Bldg. - below top of it, 2231-1, loose brown soil, not very loose - small rough stones only - rather few, no debris whatsoever; no tiles, only 2 sherds placed in box with some glass frags. Area dug N. of wall dividing rooms 3 & 4 2.00 s. of wall 1.60 m. Removed s.w. of s.w. corner of W. Bldg. between orthostates to depth of 0.08 below level of floor of room 3, s.w. Bldg., 3/4 bucket sherds (late Roman), and
