14f13 June50. A few days ago I widened trench a little in east aisle of east cella, Temple A and removed more of 1907-2, about 1/4 bag sherds which I am numbering "Bag 2" Found here coin F 1333. See Diary p. 2066 for 1907-2 and 3. SE Bldg. north portico E 16-22, 2161-3, red soil, somewhat compact, small rough stones for which see Film 143-1; about one full bucket sherds, about 2 buckets tiles which
Page 2190 I am placing at S 4.50, E 19.50 (Trench 11 system). This stratum lay over bedrock and contains late Roman sherds. No trace of the portico floor has been found in this area. No finds in 3. Mr. Hill dug small trial trench in room n.w. of room 3 of SE Bldg., 0-70 north of south wall and 0.00-0.40 above plaster floor. Removed from here handful of sherds - no tiles. Appears to be fill - not debris, reddish soil with many rough stones from fist to bucket size. Judging from the level of this floor it would appear to antedate the portico of the South Bldg. Am numbering this "bag 1". Removing also sherds in another bag, "bag 2" from small trial trenches in same fill along east and west walls of same room. Floor has not been reached here. 2 tile frags. only - from near west wall of room. This may not have been a room anymore when the S. Bldg. was constructed when its walls probably were levelled off to take the portico floor . Tiles thrown out.
Page 2192 13 June 50. Mr. Hill also dug inspection trench immediately to west of room 3 of SE Bldg. along west wall of Bldg. Removed from here about 1 bucket bag sherds and 3/4 bucket of tiles which I have placed on east wall of S. Bldg. to west. Loose dull brown earth, small rough stones only. Appear to be fill, not debris. On May 3 dug Temple A between east and west cellas in connecting link at north end, N 28.30-30.40, east of central wall, 1823-2. See p. 1830. Dug also here 1823-3, not quite so red a fill as 2, otherwise not much change. Removed about 1 bucket of sherds and same amount of tiles which I am placing at bottom of trench on south side. Removed also 1823-4 same area east of center wall at north end, no real change in stratification, about 1/10 bucket of sherds and 7 small tile frags which I have placed at bottom of trench on north side.
