stratification containing many rough stones of varying size. Rock reached here at west end of trench. Only one nondescript sherd found at bottom of 5, and only a very few elsewhere in stratum 5 (in stratum 5). Began widening trench as far as south wall of room 4, removing rough paving blocks from 1.20 - 2.70 from east wall and began removing stratum 3 here and 4.
both in strata 3 and 4 a great quantity of rough stones of varying size. In 4 there was a very large piece of lime concrete with large pebbles, a lamp, Broneer type XXVIII circa 4th century and some ribbed pottery. Continued to remove many rough stones of varying size from mound - stratum 1, at southeast corner of temple B precinct. Hardly any tiles have been found here. Unlikely, therefore, that the mound contained a building as previously supposed.
23 May 1949Bath, room 4, praefurnium, 1.20-2.70 m. from east wall of room 4, south side, removed stratum 3A, 4A, and 5A section page 1253. See film 125-4. 3A and 4A are the same. Light brown soil, loose, many rough stones of varying size - no worked blocks; some large pieces of lime concrete with large pebbles. All obviously an ancient fill after the use of the bath as such, and as late as the 4th century A.D. In room 3, Mehmet has removed the following Saturday and today (Monday). Hypocaust east end under floor where preserved page 1289-2A. Two brackets were found here and one large tile fragment and a few very small tile fragments. 1289-1E no stones, very few sherds of which one is ribbed, one piece of clear glass, two tile fragments. 1289-2C no stones, no roof debris three sherds, one small glass fragment, clear blown glass, some tiles and bricks. 1289-3C some tile fragments, no sherds, no roof debris, no stones. 1289-3B, black soil, a few large tile fragments, two fragments immediately under opening for hot air against east wall. 1289-2D some tiles, one complete brick bracket and three fragments; and tile fragment with rectangular cutting at corner to fit into brackets. All these, doubtless, fell in through opening for hot air by east wall, near south jamb of east doorway. No stones or concrete. 1289-3D tile fragments and some glass, clear blown, black soil dating from period of use, three sherds, some chunks of gypsum and of lime concrete or plaster. One large brick, and some tile fragments. Stratum 2 is everywhere a light buff brown loose stratum. Stratum 3 is black, darkened by fire, see from period of use. For notes in detail for east end of room 3 hypocaust, see Mr. Hill's notebook. Finished removing page 1373-2 just outside northwest corner of bath precinct - light brown reddish soil with few stones - small rough ones only - no worked blocks, digging down to foundation for wall and to bedrock went a little below foundation. All same fill. Only few tiles.

Began removing, room 4, praefurnium fill under pavement blocks in southwest corner of room 2.70-3.95 m. from east wall, south side. See section page 1239. So far the whole of the praefurnium under the late pavement contains the same fill down to where the soil has been blackened by fire near bedrock (stratum 6). 1.20-2.70 was dug in three strata page 1253-3A, 4A and 5A, but there was no noticeable change in fill, all loose light brown soil, with many rough stones of varying size and some large pieces of lime concrete. Stratum 6 (the black stratum) occurs so far only near entrance to hypocausts (flue). Broke up one large rough stone (block) in stratum 1239-3, to point 1.70-3.95 north in order to remove it. Two blocks forming rough pavement in southwest corner of room placed on west wall of room 4. These show in situ. Film 125-5.
