A number of rough stones of varying size at top of fill but from 25 cm. down so far fairly clean brown earth found only with small rough stones only - mostly chavara - a good many chunks of lime plaster also coming out. This once covered the walls of the cistern. Finished digging stratum 4 under west doorway and step of room 3 in praefurnium, west of doorway in room 4 - section page 1239 and 1251. As this pipe at southe end terminates within wall, its use antedates the construction of the wall. Mr. Hill digging out south bay of room 3 hypocaust. See his notes.
