Page 1348 con't fill - no debris. Also continued to dig west of room 5, stratum 4 (1267-4) much like 1275-3, reddish, light brown loose soft stratum but containing many more rough stones - small
Page 1350 ones, mostly less than fist size. No plaster - a few pieces of gypsum with some pebbles, no worked blocks; a fill, not debris. Near area west of room 4, there are a great quantity of small rough stones. South of room 7, finished removing stratum 2 (debris) and began removing stratum 3A and stratum 3. Stratum 2, debris mixed - brown soil - loose - stones of varying size. Stratum 3, brown soil, soft, rough stones only - not many - rather small on average - few sherds - no tiles. 3A same, one tile fragment only. 3 and 3A are fills - no debris. - (if it is a building) at south east corner of temple B precinct. 17 May 1949 Michalis, foreman, began restoring yesterday under Mr. Hill's direction the brick pillars at entrance from central area of room 3 (bath) to south bay, using bricks found in hypocaust for the restoration work. Continuing this work today. Removed stratum 1285-2A and 3, room 3, hypocaust, west bay, under floor. Strata 2 and 2A are the same as 1263-2, both in flue and north and south of it - light brown soft stratum. Stratum 3, north of flue is like 1263-3, quite dark, being blackened by fire. There is a brick floor here at level of rest of hypocaust floor in center of room. Floor, however, in flue and south of flue is lacking at this level and stratum 3 here is not nearly so dark as stratum 3 north of flue and in center of room (1263-3), but darker and duller in color than 1285-2 and 2A.
Page 1354 Removed stratum 4 in west precinct of bath, west of room 5 and east of lower alley. See sections pages 1267 and 1271, and film 124-31. From 14.00 - 15.20 north (trench 9 system - see section page 1271) stratum 4 contains a great quantity of small rough stones averaging fist size and smaller. From 12.00 - 14.00 there aren't so many stones but a great many pebble are found, presumably for cutting to make mosaic floors - also chips of a white stone used for same purpose. From 11.00 north to 12.00 north, there are very few stones - and the fill is rather clean - all of stratum 4 is fill - not debris - and all is light reddish brown and loose except at 15.00 and beyond where it is darker. Digging surface soil and loose except at 15.00 and beyond where it is darker. Digging surface soil over walls, running north-south south of mound at southeast corner of temple B precinct. Dark gray surface soil. This wall runs parallel with east precinct wall.

18 May Under Mr. Hill's direction brick pillars supporting north edge of floor of south bay room 3, bath, being rebuilt - or rather reinforced by Michalis. A board has been placed across them and bricks squeezed in between board and underside of floor. See section floor. Mehmet digging at east end of room 3, hypocaust, under floor. Mehmet digging page 1289-2A, 2B, 2C, 2D light brown loose soil, many tiles, chunks of lime plaster (concrete) from ceiling, very few sherds. Two coins found in 2C at depth of 0.87 m. below floor level. In 2A and 2D some brick wall brackets with tiles to fit were found. These fell doubtless through opening in floor immediately west of
Page 1358 east wall of room. Note the holes in the door jambs of the east doorway whence some of these brackets may have fallen. For sample of soil of room 3 - these are at a distance, one above the other, of 61 cm. apart. Note also holes in wall at entrance to west bay of room 3 - these are at a distance is only 51 cm. (about an A.E. foot). Were the tiles so large? In room 2, the distance is only south of wall south of room 7 of bath. See film 124-32. In west precinct of bath removed page 1271-4 from trench 9, gray surface soil. Loose dark debris just south of wall south of room 7 of bath removed page 1271-4 from trench 9, gray surface soil. In west precinct soil.
