May 11 Continued removing upper debris in building southeast of southeast corner of temple B precinct. Bath. Continued removing stratum 2 from hypocaust of room 3 in that part where floor has collapsed. In room 5, digging stratum 5 - finished 5, a mixed stratum, only small rough, no worked stones, no tiles, very few sherds. Some large stones [handwritten: at] near immediately under south wall. These are in both 4 and 5 and go down into 6. Stratum 5 was quite loose, not at all compact. Mr. Hill removing stone debris southwest of room 7. See section page 1275 - 2 (iota - 100 - kappa) - (wall of room 7). In room 7, dug part of 1273-3, a brown loose stratum containing a good deal of decomposed building material - chunks of gypsum (mortar) and lime plaster. Some places, stratum quite hard - obviously mixed - would appear to be all debris. Also removing earth from

fallen stones at west end of room 8, bath.

12 May 1949 Bath, room 5, dug down to bedrock save where this does not occur near walls. It may have been cut here for a footing trench. Brown soft earth - a loose stratum few stones and these all small rough ones - less than fist size. Larger stones found only where rock does not occur at the level where found elsewhere in center. Began removing debris of large rough stones just west of west threshold of room 4, bath. See film 124-5, and section page 1245-2, just south of collapsed cave. 1245-2 is quite different from fill of collapsed cave. Mekmet finished removing stratum 2, hypocaust, room 3. Same as stratum 1 - light brown earth - bricks, tiles, coins, lamps and sherds found. See section page 1263, in central area only where floor is not extant. See FIG2-111, 113-119 inclusive and

film 124-12 and 13. The top of stratum 3 is very dark, quite unlike stratum 1 and 2. Between south bay of room 3 hypocaust and first room of first row of pillars removed a great number of bricks near bottom of stratum 2 for which see film 123-32; 124-12 and 13. In room 7, bath, cleared down to floor removing stratum 3, section page 1273- that is in west side of room. See yesterday's diary. Finished removing stratum 2 in east side of room. This contains fair number of rough stones of varying size, chunks of gypsum - in fair quantity, a great many tiles, but very few sherds. Soil is light brown. The entire stratum is hard throughout. For east side, west side of floor. Probably all debris. F147 found directly on floor, west side of floor. For east side see film 124-8, 9 and 14 and 15. Began removing stratum 3, east side. Continued removing upper debris of small rough stones from building at southwest corner of temple B. Began removing stratum 5 (section page 1277) west of room 5,

bath, a very dark stratum consisting of earth which has been blackened by fire, few stones - all rough small ones, few tiles, a good quantity of sherds, no gypsum or plaster - very loose fill. Probably at too low a level to be debris. Possibly an accumulative ancient dump. Continued removing stone debris at west end of room 8, rough stones of varying size, many large ones - also worked stones which are being removed to construction pile. Two or three worked stones of note stored on south wall at west end. I 119, F 622a. See of Mr. Hill's notebook. Brown slightly reddish soil. See film 124-3, 10 and 11.

13 May 1949 Digging west of south side of room 4, bath, see sections 1245 and 1249-2. Light brown soil, rough stones of varying size including some large ones practically no tiles - coin F112. Room 7 dug down to floor level - floor

consists of small rough stones. Much ribbed pottery on floor (east side). Also finished digging room 7 (west side) page 1273 - down to floor, stratum 3. Ribbed
