Diary Page 1286 con't flues) a second stratum (artificial stratum) was dug down to a depth of 70 cm. below level of top of floor. Bricks, tiles, and brick brackets from this were placed on edge of floor around walls of room in small piles - each pile representing what was found between the two brick pillars supporting the floor beneath. The soil was all light brown in both strata. Some lime plaster was also found. In room four, removed paving block just west of east door and dug down to depth of 1.40 m. below top (highest point) of east (late) threshold block; also dug under same doorway down to same level - no difference noted anywhere in stratum here - all buff brown earth. Few stones. Many bricks and chunks of gypsum which was used as mortar in brick construction. See section page 1239-3. In southwest section of room 5 there was some stone debris near south wall which was not found in stratum 3 near east door. See film 123-38 and section page 1265-3 and 1255-3. There was debris elsewhere in stratum 3, but

Page 1288 not so concentrated. West precinct bath. Began digging in what Mr. Hill is calling west precinct of bath, west of west wall of room 7 and west of room5, and east of wall separating bath from buildings west of it. This is the wall between theta and iota trench 9. Dug here two north to eleven north section page 1275- stratum 2 - a stratum of debris on either side of small late wall running also north-south at iota - 100 - k. Editors note: not a wall but an accident of digging. Loose light brown earth, many small fist size rough stones. A number of worked blocks were found near wall at theta - 100 - iota and these have been stored in wall/. These came out from upper part of stratum from 8 north to 11 north (west of room 7). Under these there was nothing but small stones. From 2 north to 8 north the rough stones were of varying size including many of 25 to 50 cm. in greatest dimension. All of this has not been removed.

Page 1292 See film 123-38, for same before removing. Worked blocks found also this area, better ones have been placed on east wall of what now is being called the lower alley near where found - others being piled up to south of trench 9, to north on other side of wall fuming east west, that is to day south of it. Also dug to west of room 5. Section page 1267-2. Some worked blocks were found near east wall of lower alley - these were placed on wall. Otherwise stones were few. Loose brown earth - debris. See also section page 1277, stratum 2, 3 & 4, All being debris. See film 122-22. Also finished digging street 1, west 2-12, A' - B', stratum 1 and 2, west 6-12. Stratum 1, 0-20 stratum 2 20-50, west 2-6. Stratum 1 = 0-15 cm.; stratum A = 15-25 cm. Stratum 1 was a little darker than 2

Page 1298 otherwise there was no essential change. Fairly loose brown soil, with few small stones. No debris. A natural accumulation, probably on very ancient fill free of building matter, but many tiles and sherds were found from 2-6 but very few sherds from 6-12 and practically no tiles. The second stratum was a little redder than the first. See film 123-15-20 inclusive, 122-25, 26, 24 taken by L. Angel in my absence. Also began removing upper heavy debris from building at southeast corner of temple B precinct. See film 123-11,12. Also dug in fallen cave west of room 4, bath (trench 9, zeta - theta, north 16-20, section page 1241 - 2 and 3 down to rock or fallen rock.) Stratum 2 was a darkish stratum consisting of a great number of small rough stones, mainly fist size. Stratum 3 was about the same but with fewer stones. See coin F95 from stratum 3. Lamps also found here. This about covers work done during my absence and brings me up to
