Diary Page 1274 con't small rough stones trench 9, zeta-theta, north 16-20, below level of bedrock where this is intact. See section page 1241. It looks very much as though there had been a cave here which has collapsed. And that the earth we are now removing was the fill of the collapsed cave. Compare with theta - k, 17-19 north, section page 1239. Digging street 1, A'-B', surface soil, dark earth, small rough stones, mostly smaller than fist size. West 2-12 m. from 2-6 m. west digging to depth of 10 cm. only. Fill of the collapsed
Page 1276 cave, (see above) is very loose soil - very dark, from 16-19 north (zeta-theta), but brown from 20-21 north. It consists of a very great many small rough stones, larger stones being conspicious by their absence. The indication is that this is an ancient dump during a reconstruction period. The latter have been piled up under Mr. Hill's direction at trench 9, mu-nu, south 0-2. For stratum 2 digging east part separately - part east of row of columns. See film 102, 30, 33, 34 and 35. Film 123 - 8 and 24.
Page 1280 Today 9 May began removing 1273 -2 on east side of room (room 7) no essential change from stratum 1 for which see also section page 1257 - 1 - loose brown soil- heavy debris. Began digging also 1257 - 2 (west end of room 7) - no essential change from 1 - all debris. At bottom of stratum 1 against west wall a good deal of lime plaster was found. Also an inscription (F blank) (in my absence) upper Mekmet continued to clear, under Mr. Hill's direction (F blank). In room 3 stratum of hypocausts throughout room save south part of south bay. Samples of ribbed pottery found everywhere. This stratum was all debris consisting mainly of bricks and tiles, some rough stones - lime plaster - a few worked stones, comparatively small, have been stored on north wall (also some others as yet not recorded). See F88-92 inclusive. Soil in upper hypocaust fill was consistently light buff brown
Page 1284 throughout. A fair number of brick brackets like F63 also found in hypocaust. These have been piled up with bricks and tiles just north of north wall. In room 6, Mr. Hill dug down to bedrock. See his notebook. Bedrock was reached only southwest corner. There was no apparent tumble from adjacent walls below the level of the top of the late south threshold. In rest of room Mr. Hill dug down to a natural accumulation which may have been the approximate level of the original floor. All worked blocks from this room have been placed on the south wall of room 8, just east of three blocks belonging to an arch and which came from the west end of room 8. In room 5, stratum 3 and 4 was removed only. This was all debris. Much like stratum 2, but a little harder and somewhat darker.
Page 1286 Marco also dug immediately to west of room 5 (which is really not a room as it has no west wall) from 0.60 m. below modern ground level to level of stratum 4 (bottom of three) of room 5. The debris is just the same in character as found in room 5 - with good number of rough stones of varying size. Very few sherds and tiles here. In room 2 (central room as previously often called) the openings for the distribution of hot air through ais was cleared and bricks and brick brackets and tiles were placed in seven piles on depressed sector of floor. Plaster fragments were placed in another pile also on floor near center. This was all from a depth of 0-50 cm. below level of floor where intact (stratum 1 of
