the soil was brown in color. A few stones coming out only, unworked stones averaging about 25 cm. for their greatest dimension. Have not removed any soil yet further north than 1.10 m. from supporting wall immediately to south of hole in floor. Stratum changes at 0.75 cm. below brick epistyle where dark soil is found - very much darker than upper soil. North of 1.10 m. the upper accumulation of soil is about 40 cm. below epistyle of bricks. Placing all sherds found north of 1.10 m. from supporting wall down until stratification changes in separate bag. As there is no hope in roof over this area, the accumulation should be less disturbed by whatever came in

through the hole afterthe break through. The soil coming out in this area - that is to say the upper part of the accumulation here is the same as that found under the hole. Roman ribbed coarse ware coming out. The accumulation 1.50 m. north of supporting east-west wall appears to be fairly level - the top of it being about 40 cm. on an average. Below the underside of the brick epistyle. The accumulation under the hole just north of the wall was, of course, much higher - reaching up to the floor of the room above. Earth from 1.10 north of cross wall to north wall being dumped separately for straining in sieve - also earth over floor in central room. In central room digging down th that part of floor which has fallen into hypocaust below. Sherds on collapsed portion placed in separate bag. Earth over floor everywhere light brown, clean, with hardly any stones. In central room no tiles were found over sunken floor - only overthat part of floor which was found intact. These were few and have been placed in bag.

Began removing debris under surface soil, 0-2 m. north of rooms 2 and 3 of bath. See film 118-28 and 29. Worked blocks being removed to about 5 cm. to north. Dark gray soil, due to vegetation, loose. Began removing light debris just under surface soil trench 9, p-t, north 2-6, south of southeast room of bath. See film 118-30.
