Diary Page 1222 con't All worked blocks from central room (room 2) being removed to trench 9, nu, south 2.00 m. Removing dark soil from debris trench 9, theta - mu, north 17-20, area west of bath. Removing surface soil southeast of bath, trench 9, p-t, north 2-6, soil loose and darkened by vegetation. Removing street 1, x-omega, west 6-12, second stratum - dark loose soil - no debris - same as stratum 1, 0-20 m. - .45 m. below modern ground level. Worked blocks in southern part of central room, bath, (room 2) being placed to west of others at trench 9, nu south 2.00 m. (see above). See film 119-6, 7, and 8. 18 April 1949 Removing dark surface soil among worked blocks trench 9, theta - k, north 14-18, rather loose soil containing a good quantity of round rough stones as well as worked blocks. I know now that these are coming from 18-22 not from 14-18; it is obviously all fallen stuff. Removing earth and rough stones from room west of central room of bath (room 3) depth 1.20 - 1.30 m. from top of north wall. See film 119-12. Cleaning floor of hypocaust, east room, leaving sample of burnt stratum between two most westerly brick pillars in most southerly row of 5. Cleaning out passageway leading from central room hypocaust. Removing upper debris bath, room 3 (see page 1229) 2-4 m. from north wall, 0-1.50 m. from east wall. See film 119-20. Unlike soil in upper debris elsewhere in this room, soil here is light brown, comparatively more compact so roots could not get into it. (Southeast room) removing stratum 2 from

southeast room, bath. See section page 1225 and film 119, 18 and 19. Very loose, brown earth, rather light brown, with many small rough stones, mainly fist size, and fair quantity of tiles. Also chunks of lime plaster and concrete coming out here in east end of room which is being dug first, also a fair amount of sand is mixed in decomposed building matter. Southeast of bath removed trench 9, sigma - t, north 4-6, strata 0.15-40 and 0.40-0.70 m. to mosaic floor (I 120, F 565, I 125, F 760) Began removing second stratum 0.15-0.40 p-t, north 2-6 where it has not yet been removed. See film 119-22. Removing earth, central room, (room 2) south of sunken floor down to level of threshold block of south door. (If this block was used as a threshold in its present position it was obviously at a very late period.)

19 April 1949 Removing southeast room, bath, page 1225-2 and central room, south to sunken floor, page 1221-2. Removing debris

southeast of southeast room. See film 119-31. Placed large ashlar block showing in debris in wall to left, wall running north-south. Removing street 1, omega-A', west 8-12, surface soil, dark brown loose soil - no debris. Removed earth from level at top of round monument to east of this area down to bottom of moulded base (street 1, west 6-8). Removed surface soil trench 9, lambda - nu, north 19-21 approximately between walls - northwest of bath. Quit work at 11;00 A.M. on account of heavy rains - heavy snow down to Platres.

20 April 1949 Stacking tiles and bricks from hypocaust, upper stratum, that is stratum above dark stratum over hypocaust floor - against east wall of east room of bath. Removing second stratum in southeast room and south portion of central room, part south of sunken floor. See sections pages 1221 and 1225. South part of southeast room, the second stratum is very loose and contains a fair amount of sand. The northern part contains many bricks and small stones (stratum 3). See film 119-32 and 33. Digging trench 9,
