of large blocks. No sherds [handwritten: five] either only tiles - removing tiles and stacking them 8 meters to north of area. All the soil in these last two areas is very dark, due doubtless to vegetation and lack of any concentrated amount of decomposed building matter. It is quite different from the soil found within, the heavy debris in the central and eastern part of the bath where almost all of it immediately below the surface was light buff brown. Immediately south of east room (bath) sigma - t, north 9-14 - debris produced only two non descript sherds.

which I have thrown out. No sherds will be thrown out without mention being made of this in diary. Or on tag. Began removing(bath) trench 9, sigma - t, north 9-14 (east of east room of bath-soil below level of bottom of orthostate showing in film 118-4, q.v. Finished removing debris here for which see film 118-3. At about level of bottom of orthostate a stratum of gypsum and stones in a solid mass appearing. Not removing this now, but digging below this level only where this does not occur. Digging central room from 20cm. below level of west threshold down, changing bag for sherds here though no change in stratification. Have decided not to remove worked stones before going deeper. See film 118-6 and 7. Began removing south of central room of bath, trench 9, at 0, north 8-12, heavy debris showing in film 118-8. Mr. Hill has been taking notes on stones being removed from bath. A considerable amount of rubble coming from debris a little above floor level in central room. There is a chance,

however, that this debris may be broken up chavara blocks. It is uncertain, therefore, judging from the debris whether the upper walls were composed of rubble. Very little rubble found in other rooms of bath. A bit of floor of central room appearing immediately to east of west door. All stones from southeast room (worked blocks only) placed at u (trench 9) immediately east of room. Worked blocks from east room also removed to u (trench 9) immediately to east of room. All worked blocks in upper and middle debris of central room have been placed on adjacent walls, those from lower debris have been piled up 1.50 m. south of west door. Heavy worked blocks from room west of the central room placed immediately north of room. Tiles stacked as already noted, a good many found but a comparatively small number of sherds.

April 12 Began removing earth from hole in east room of bath. See film 118-9 and 10. Began removing page 1203-2, trench 9, sigma-t, north 12.50-14.00, just east of east wall of east room. Began removing page 1205-3 (12.50-14.00 north) removing trench 9, o-p., north 4-6, surface soil south of bath. Floor here appears to be very near surface. Sherds found over floor placed in separate bag. Digging bath, central room, from approximate level of floor down. This stratum appears to be free of heavy debris and worked blocks found immediately above it in loose soil. Soil from level of floor down is harder and redder in color. Continuing to remove earth in room bris is now beginning to become redder in color. (film 118-13). Trench 9 nu-o, north 17-20, debris and o-t, north 17-20 debris (surface soil) north. debris.

April 13 Began digging immediately north of north wall of east room of bath to find entrance to hypocaust - central part of wall. See section 1207-2. Light brown soil. No debris. Soil dark only next to wall. Yesterday dug hypocaust under east room of bath to depth of 75 cm. below brick epistyle. All
