Diary Page 1174 con't building trench 9, nu-t, north 8-18. Removing large rough surface blocks to area east of building. Removing tiles to same place and stacking them up there. No well worked blocks being removed as yet. Southwest room cleared down to what may have been a late floor, possibly for squatters-cooking pot found on it. See film 116-29.
April 7 Removing debris over outer building east end. See film 116-30-33 inclusive. Worked blocks in debris being removed under direction of Mr. Hill to point 2.60 m. east of east wall of building [handwritten: u]. Almost on trench 9 grid line u. For trench 9 systems the topographical chart. No sherds fouin in upper debris over building o-t, north 8-18
Page 1178 but a fair quantity of tiles are coming out. These are being stacked east of the building. A lot of rubble coming out. Soil is very light brown in color due doubtless to decomposed building matter. West of street 1 continuing as yesterday, and removed greater part t-x west 0-8 down to rock.
8 April 1949 Began removing lower debris in central part of outer building o-p, north 12-16. See film 113-1-5 inclusive. Continuing to remove lower debris in southeast end also. Cleared down to floor east room of what I have called the outer building. A hole in the floor shows clearly there was a hypocaust below. Fragments of concrete, water conduits in stone (fragments) and other evidence make it almost certain that this building was a bath establishment. The central area appears to have been built also over a cellar-possibly another hypocaust.
Page 1186 Therefore until further notice in diary I am referring to this building as the bath. Street 1, west 0-8, dug between wall at [handwritten: E] and wall at omega, leaving some samples of debris. Wherever heavy debris was removed it has been photographed. Just south of well north of T west 6-9 there is a natural and early accumulation free of debris and stones but containing sherds-Hellenistic and earlier as one approaches rock. Earth in this area west of street all darkened by vegetation. Dark earth few stones or debris. Began removing street 1, Y-X, west 10-12, surface soil. Large and worked stones being removed to area west of 14 west.
11 April 1949 Removing surface soil depth 0-30 cm. of street 1, phi-x, west 0-2. (dark soil-doubtless due to vegetation). Continued removing street 1 Y-X, west 10-12 surface soil. Dark earth, few stones or debris.
Page 1192 Street 1, at gamma west 2-8, cleaning heavy debris - just north of wall at gamma. Continued removing debris in rooms of bath - central room, north 12-16, removing usual kind of soil - light buff brown in color and consisting largely of decomposed building matter. This was found generally everywhere in this room and east and southeast room under the heavy upper debris. Mr. Hill removing worked blocks in northwesterly section of bath (see film 117-34-36 inclusive and film 118 (photo record notebook I) numbers 1 and 2. Began digging 1 immediately east of east wall of east room in hopes of finding entrance to hypocaust below. See film 118-3. Removing bath trench 9 p-t, north 16-19, just north of north wall of east room (bath).
Page 1194 Removing bath trench 9, o-p, north 16-18, surface soil, north of central room. Removing bath, trench 9 k-mu, north 14-18. Surface soil in among heavy debris of large worked blocks - no sherds, only tiles. Removing tiles to a distance of 8 meters north of this section of bath. And stacking them up.
