14 June 1948 Five men only. Removing in alley stratum 2, consisting mainly of mud mortar [handwritten: R] (trench 9, a-b, (a-80-b) south 1.80-2.80, section page 1109) and also 3 consisting of stones and tiles. Also dug alley trench 9 A-H (A-115-b) north 0-80, stratum 2 and 3, section page 1111. Dug also opposite large threshold in central part of alley, section page 1117-2. In alley the top of stratum 2 appears to have formed a later ground level. Its depth is the height of the step below the large threshold. It consists where it has been dug into of a clean fill composed mainly most probably of mud mortar. See Mr. Hill's notebook. Also dug immediately south of west jamb of south threshold a small pit in search of drain ( or water conduit) which was found farther south. Iliffe and Mitford leave on bicycles for Paphos.
