Monday 7 June Trench 9, just west of small threshold at e, north 10.00 m. below floor level or at least below heavy portion of debris. Floor level may prove to be a little lower. Found a lower level for which see section page 1089. Dug here only in vicinity of small threshold in wall running north to south at e, 10 north.
Page 1098 Wall running north to south is the older wall, the walls running east to west on either side being later, except perhaps for wall running d-e, 10 north which may be contemporaneous. We have here, probably, the northeast corner of the large building east of the alley. Also dug trench 9, d-e, south 0-1 along south side of wall running east to west, a wall which is later I find than the wall running north to south at e. Dug here d-e, south 0-1, stratum 3. See section page 1051 - 3. Brown earth, very few stones, no debris, appears to be fill only, top of 3 being a trodden level. See film 112, number 35. Many sherds found in stratum 3. Mr. Hill setting up niche, center street 1, west side. Mitford visiting Apollo with view to inclusion of our inscriptions in corpus. Removing blocks at entrance to square room from street 1, east side street (center). See film 112, number 36. Removing dump near cistern 2, beyond precinct wall on northeast limits of site. Dug also in lower room east of south end of alley along north wall of room and 0-1.30 m. from it (page 1067-3) to floor level which went with [illegible] from (page 1067-3) to floor level
Page 1100 3 consists of reddish earlier fireplace in northwest corner of room. Stratum earth - stones of varying size but not larger than fist size, all rough, a few stones a little larger than fist size, fair number of tiles, few sherds, no figurines, some glass.
8 June 1948 Dug in northeast corner of room south of east building. See film 113, number 3. Reddish earth, small rough stones only, tiles, sherds, glass (F380) and lamps (F381-2). See section page 1101, stratum 2. Digging here to find if alley drain continues in this direction. No trace. Removed slabs covering drain at south end in alley and drain found to terminate here, having been removed south of this point in antiquity, to make room for new construction. See film 113, number 4. Dug over threshold at north end of alley. See film 113, number 5. Dug trench 9 gamma-d, about 12-13 south. See section page 1097-2. To examine walls and their comparative chronology. Mitford working on inscriptions. Mr. Hill applying shellac to Roman
Page 1108 squeeze ( impression in plaster made by paving block in antiquity- a reused block inscribed on its under side-missing-the impression being legible or partly so in the plaster. It is in Latin. Evened off with soil ground over north threshold in end of alley. See film 113, number 5 and 7. Trench 9, d-e, north about 10.50- east end, south of court to east building. Dug in room, 14.50. Found Hellenistic lamp F384 and coin F385 here at bottom of 1089-2 on what appears to have been an ancient ground level. Many sherds. Also bronze F385 same level. 1089-2 appears to be all filled - not debris. Dug trench 9, alley, south end, page 1003-3 and 4. Footing trench cannot be traced everywhere along east wall of alley here but there is a definite change in fill along wall here and there. See section. Dug in northeast corner of room south of east building to find whether drain in south end of alley continues in this directionpage 1101-2 to floor which had not been properly cleaned here and 1101-3, red earth, many stones, hardly any tiles, glass and lamp fragments, - part of 3 only.
