also dug trench 9, (gamma-140-d) to (d-120-e) south 2.50 - 4.50, stratum 2. See section page 1067. This stratum consists of debris, many building stones, - almost all rubble and many tiles. Two cornice blocks restored in cement for podium of stedium set up in place by J.Y. Dug room at south end of alley opposite corner of wall where column stands. From floor level down to bedrock. See section opposite page, stratum 3. Very few sherds and two or three fragments of tiles only, reddish earth. Dug also trench 9 south of south wall of lower room south of alley section page 1019 stratum 3. (a-b-to wall) south 10.70-11.50 m. Dark brown soil, not debris. This was fill, not debris. Dug also reddish, moderate number of stones, fist size and smaller, very few tiles, not many sherds. No debris. Reached terracotta pipeline running along south face of wall. The ground in which pipe lies definitely softer than that immediately to south of it although stratum [handwritten: looks] the same in all other respects. Page 1084
4 June 1948 Dug south of lower room south of alley, a-b-wall south of south face of south wall 0-0.83 m. Section page 1019 stratum 3 and 4. Stratum 4 represents fill of ancient trench dug in order to lay pipeline. Dug trench 9 b-50-gamma, 6.85-7.40 south over bedrock; see section page 1075-stratum 3. Dug room east of south end of alley trench 9, b-e, south 2-6, stratum 2. See section page 1067-2. Small section of this dug yesterday (gamma-140-d) (d-120-e) south 2.50-4.50. Trench 9, eta-thete, south 8-10, stratum 1, debris only. Removing dump beyond northeast limits of precinct wall. Sixteen men in all. Yesterday about eighteen men. Trench 9 (a-60-b)-wall, south about 5-6 m. Section page 1003 - 2 y.
5 June Mr. Hill lifted inscribed stele among debris, street 1, at 0, west 10.00 m. It appears to be lying on foundation for stone pavement where it fell or was placed presumably after the pavement had been taken away. It was found in a very clean soil which was doubtless here washing of earth. Found drain in south end of alley. Dug stratum 2 (zeta) here of red, clean, hard-packed soil - not much different if at all than 2(gamma) and 2 gamma. See section page 1003. 2 (zeta) fills in places near east wall what may well have been footing trench for this wall. Man who built wall could see it, so fill probably entdates well, that is the stratum (1003-3) which the trench we sunk into now occupied with 2 (zeta). However, 3 in places appears to have been a ground level, gone right up to the wall. Top of 1003-3 appears to have been surfaces flush with bottom of orthostates on west hard and white and its upper surfaces. Removed natural accumulation found in drain over drain floor page 1003-d. Water appears to have run south in drain as lower part is 0.025 m. below upper north end as excavated. Removed stratum 3 (1003-3) a hard white fill and dug further into footing trench where this could be traced near wall or rather stones, few stones, soft red earth, 4 zeta. 2 zeta continues down below level of 4, soft red earth, few stones, no sherds to date in footing trench. What I took to be drain floor (above) may not be drain floor. See film 112, numbers 21, 25, 26, 29, 30. Dug in room east of south end of alley removing more debris (page 1067-2b). See film 112, numbers 22, 27. Removed trench 9, room east of south end of alley, upper room, large building south room, section page 1051 stratum 2 gamma. This was a narrow clean fill with very few stones, no tiles at all but containing some pottery. Dark soil some quite blackened from five caused definitely by fire and not roots. Removed pottery in black soil separately- in separate bag. Began digging stratum 3 here along north wall of room. See film 112, trench 9, (d-125-e) to (d-150-e) north 11.70 - 12.60 under floor level up against wall running north to south (southwest face)
