1, E-H e-H, west 0-4 stratum 2 (see F2045-2047) to depth of 0.68 m. below modern ground level, beginning with this stratum at depth of .40 m. below modern ground level. Reddish earth and very few stones. E-Z west 0-6, stratum 1 dug before war. Removed stratum 2, E-H, west 6-8 and Z-H west 4-6 to bedrock. 31 May 1958 Trench 9, e-eta, south 6-8 plus, stratum 2 (debris and fill thrown in over debris of fallen terrace wall) see sections page 1029 and 1037. Finisħed digging street 1, H-theta, west 8-10, stratum 1 (surface soil) and began stratum 2. Also finished digging E-I, west 0-4, stratum 2, and E-H, west 0-8, stratum2, reaching bedrock at bottom of stratum 2 E-Z west 4-8. No sherds found in depressions in rock . Great many sherds and fair number of figurines found E-H, west 0-4. No clear stratification in this area west of street. It probably consists of a filling in during the 1st century A.D. I see now that H-I, stratum 2 was removed some time ago. See film 112, number 1 showing page 1058 this area after stratum 2 was removed. See also film 112, number 2,and section page 979. Mr. Hill digging out a little of debris immediately east of court of east building. A lot of mud motar here among stones. Notquite as white as usual building material. Whiteness probably due often mainly to gypsum used in roof for seaming tiles. Tiles here conspicuous for their absence.
1 June 1948 Digging trench 9, e-eta, south 0-2, stratum 2 between walls. Many small stones coming out - in fact full of them and rather reddish soil. Digging also 2-4 to where bedrock is cut beyond which point there is nothing but debris. See section 1037. Many small stones from 2to 4 south also - fill not debris. Also digging in area northeast of cistern 3. Trench 9, e-eta, south 4-6 in area of debris where bedrock has been cut. Most of debris appears to have been from terrace wall. See film 112, number 6.
Page 1070 Trench 9, extended terrace wall debris area from eta-theta, 4-8 south stratum 1. Dug small e-zeta wall, south 1-2, stratum 2 (section page 1051) and zeta- 100-eta,^-c south 1-3, stratum 1 (also section page 1051), removing pre-war dump at southwest corner of temple B. Mr.Hill sets up sample of window on east wall of alley., north part, sample of window for upper story. One jamb (one to north) borrowed - sill and other jamb belong together. Preparing to set up also a window on other south side of large doorway. This will be the window which actually went here but slightly lower in wall, a lower story window, Dug very small trench, trench 9, b-gamma, south 6.90 - 7.45 stratum 3 (same stratification here as shown in section covering this area page 1029) immediately south of column on southwest corner of room southeast of alley. Dug in depth of 0.09 m. reddish brown ratherclean soil, very few stones - small ones only, no debris, one tile fragment only, few sherds. This stratum is below floor level.

3 June Foreman began removing by mistake part of 1039-2 2. Placed a few sherds in bag, cleaned off, and began digging stratum 3 as planned. Reddish soil with small stones only, very few tiles, moderate amount of sherds - mostly on the floor. Foreman of the opinion that most of this stratum is wall debris. As I look carefully to examine 3 I find the difference between 2X and 3 may be onlydue to pointing of gypsum on the walls which made a harder white stratum near the face of the walls where it fell. Save for this difference all above floor appears to be a fairly homogenous stratum. 2x appears to be same as three and 2 gamma may have been an intrusive pit in 3, - the fill of this intrusive pit being 2 gamma. See plan page 1039 and section page 1045. Removed trench9, stratum 3 of e-zeta - to wall, south 122 m. See section page 1051. Reddish earth, fair number of stones, fist size and smaller, rough stones, fair number of tiles marked and placed near by - southwest of stake e, on south line of trench 9.
