28 May 1948 Trench 9, e-zeta, south about 4-6m, stratum 2 consisting mainly of dark earth with few and only very small stones. also stratum 3 consisting of very many small stones (fill) and many large worked stones (fall-debris). It looks much as if in order to get rid of the debris the area was all filled in - probably soon after an earthquake. There are places where there are few new stones in stratum 3 but these places are probably all part of some fill - very loose - tends to cave in as one stands on edge of trench. Draftsman drawing sections this area trench 9, a-theta, south 9 and e, south 0-12. J.L. supervising. Where there are only few stones in 3, earth tends to be rather red whereas elsewhere it is dark grey-brown. From d-theta strata 1 and 2 are the same. Finished digging street 1, E-H, west 4-8, stratum 2. Only few stones and very small ones. Reddish brown earth, reached bedrock in many places. Trench 9, M-N, west 8-12, stratum 2, very few stones. Only small ones but many sherds. A great many sherds at the bottom of

this stratum and one Roman lamp, Broneer type XXII, belonging probably to the early 1st century A.D. F346. Finished digging street 1, pi-sigma, west 10-12, stratum 4 (see section page 971). Found also F348 at same level as F346 and 347 q.v. Dug trench 9, theta-i, south 0-4, stratum 2.
