5 Nov. 1947 Removed torso and head of marble statue to hut for night. Prazitelian type. See photo record of day's work. Digging below street level in [handwritten: Doric] dark portico, also in room south of portico, south section below street level. A lot of small stones and chips coming out with loose brown soil. Dug in room north of Dorie portico down to level of bottom of second course (course below top course). All sherds from top of second course to bottom of it in one bag. This stratum full of small stones and chips - chips from same kind of blocks as on encircling walls. Mr.Hill thinks the chips date from a period when people came to cart off building material to be used elsewhere. Southwest corner contained no chips. See film 98, number 8.

6 Nov. 1947 Page 720 Removed finds 8-15 inclusive. Began digging further in this area where these were found over good masonry north of room north of Doric portico. Mr. Hill digging in debris west side of room between altar 2 and end of street 1 (south end). See film 98, number 2, 13 and 14. Showers at 10:30 and looks very threatening now at 11:00. Heavy rains in mountains - thunder and lightning. Yesterday we had occasional heavy rains of short duration - first of season. Many terracotta figurines and small stones coming out of room of Doric portico with large threshold (I mean the room with the large threshold). Dug here to depth of 64 centimeters below top of threshold. Mr.Hill finds large fine examples of Pan tiles in his excavation. (See above).

7 Nov. 1947 Began digging third stratum; plan and section page 693. This is a hard stratum consisting mainly of small chunks of chavara which breaks easily in your hands like stale bread. Could this have Page 728 been the original fill dating from the time that the trench was hewn in the rock? When they hewed out the trench in the rock, the broken up pieces of rock (chavara) a calcareous sand stone would have been thrown along side into their dump. For some reason part of this dump may have been thrown in again into the bottom of the trench where we now find it. Found coin (P21) which see. 8 Nov. (Saturday) No excavations on account of heavy rains. Rained almost all last night and nearly all day. Barometer 29.60. Southwest wind. 10 Nov. (Monday) Digging to bedrock in all rooms of Doric portico. Digging wheelbarrow track trench 9, gamma - zeta north 22-24, down to foundation of floor. Mr. Hill continuing to excavate in room south of Doric portico - debris over floor, northwest corner of room. Page 732 Digging trench 9, delta - zeta north 18-22, north of room north of Doric portico, lower part of debris 10 to 0 centimeters above level of top course of room. See film 98, number 22 showing some stones including F23 before removing. Marble statue came from this area.
