Nov. 11Tuesday Began another trial trench across street 1 just south of most southern bit of paving. See plan and section page 733. Also began trial trench across street 1 opposite south end of south room of Doric portico between paving stones. See film 98, number 26 which shows place before digging. Digging second stratum of street 1, trial trench, p 729-3 Page 739 Many chunks of chavara coming out. Few stones - not nearly so many as in 2 - almost all chunks of chavara. Mr. Hill notes foundation of street 1 uneven in height due to uneven thickness. Page 744 of the paving stones. Nov. 12-15 Excavated debris east of east building (trench 9 alpha - gamma, south 0-10). Excavated trench 7, p 745 Page 745 Strata 2 and 3 and trench 7, E-H, east 0-3, stratum 2. Extended trial pit street 1 north end south section (see page 737) south about one meter to remove some blocks and including a cornice visible inside of trench, and east to pavement to see what kinds of cuttings might appear in rock adjacent to rock-hewn trench. On west side rock appears to have been cut to allow water to flow more readily into rock-hewn trench. Was the purpose of these rockhewn trenches to drain water? Dug street 1 (trench 9 zeta - eta north 24-28) down to rock. Mr. Hill dug in southwest corner of east building and found footingt\ trench for part of south wall. Page 770 Nov. 12-15 con't Dug drain to street 1 (page 735) finding coins, lamps, bones, glass and sherds. Strata 2, 3, 4. See finds 31-57; coins: 33-35 inclusive, 46, 47, 55-77. John Young continuing to clear large parts of stadium. Is leveling off ground at west end. The moulded base over euthynteria^\ orthostate, and cornice found - the base in situ. What were formerly believed to be blocks from the moulded base course Mr. Hill now believes to be seats. Moulded course about 50.80 centimeters, orthostate same, cornice around 45 centimeters roughly. Seat about 42 centimeters. Steps perhaps 21 centimeters.
