with only birds would be balanced or rather matched by that with only fishes, just as the two panels with both birds and fishes matched each other. Whatever the arrangement, there can be little doubt but that all four panels contained pictures of birds and fishes. [handwritten: 8] Of the one probable larger, oblong panel to the north of the other four, nothing is preserved or known.
There are preserved in this east mosaic (49), three inscriptions;one of three lines across the width of the room (63) south of the inner court (13-17) which marked,as it were, the transition from the rooms to the west;[handwritten: 9] one, shorter one of two lines at the south end;[handwritten: 10] one of six lines, on the east side across the middle door into the east mosaic room [handwritten: 11 It is balanced, as it were, by the inscription on the west side in front of the same (52), see above p.2] (52). Of these three inscriptions, the one on the west side stands out,not only because it is surrounded on three sides by a border of its own whereas the other two inscriptions are within the border which surrounds the panels, but, also, because as measured,it is a little longer than the inscrip- [handwritten: 12 because] tion on the south end, and there are four lines of tesserae between the three lines of this inscription compared with only three between the two lines in the inscription at the south end. The large size of the letters in the inscriptions on the south and west sides is virtually the same, but that of the inscription on the east side is considerably smaller.
The large inscription on the west side reads as follows:
