The blocks in course 1 east of 25.10 m. vary in height between 0.22 m, and 54.00 m; and in length between 0.47 m. and 1.38 m. (entire course not yet cleared). The height of the course here is composed of two and sometimes more worked blocks. The north face of the extant wall has been exposed from 24.70 m. to 33.70 m. east down to bedrock. The thickness of the first course here averages about 0.72 m. and is close to this everywhere between these two points. As the inside face was not intended to be visible, the worked blocks occur only in the south face and donot extend through the thickness of the wall.

The top of course 1 at 33.70 m. east is approximately at level -1.05 m. where its height is 0.76 m.; at 43.70 m. it is at level -1.21 m. where its height is 1.20 m. A block in the first course of the east wall of exedra 2 from 45.23 m. to 45.75 m. east extends as far south as the south face of the south wall. The top of it is level with the top of course 1, in the south wall to the west of it, but the block to the east of it drops from level -1.25 m to 1.43 m. Between this block and the next block in the wall, the top of which is at the same level, there is a gap of 0.11 m., reaching down to level -2.22 m. which is filled with chips and small stones but served to drain water from alley 2 to the area south of the building.

At 49.50 m. east the level is at -1.50 m. where the height of the course is 1.08 m. East of this point the course consists largely of rubble until we approach the southeast corner. The level there is -1.55 m. and the height of the course, 1.26 m. From 53.95 m. east to the southeast corner the top of the course is the extant top of the wall (plan, fig. 2). The thickness of the course where examined east of 33.70 m. (see sections)
