The South Wall. [handwritten: cleared] [handwritten: 6]

The south wall, wherever [handwritten: examined], is founded on bedrock or on remains of earlier walls similarly founded (sections, figs. 9-16 incl.). The bedrock slopes fairly consistently, being at level -1.48 m. at the southwest corner and at -3.18 m. at the southeast corner. The foundation course is in rubble much like that of the north wall, without any proper face in either side. The depth varies from 0.89 m. at 13.00 m. east of the southwest corner to -0.37 m. at the southeast corner east of the southwest corner to -0.37 m. at the southeast corner. The width varies as shown in the sections.

The top of the foundation also slopes downward from west to east, being at -0.82 m. at the southwest corner, and at -2.81 m. at the southeast corner. At 12.82 m. east of the southwest corner it drops 0.23 m. East of this point the first course takes up the difference in these two levels, being here just about 0.23 m. in height. The top of the course at 13.00 m. is at level -0.92 m. (Film 166-5, fig. 17). From 13.00-23.34 m. it increases to -0.45 m. and maintains this height to 25.10 m. where the level is at -0.99 m. The blocks here vary in length between 0.40 m. and 1.10 m. Beyond 25.10 m. the blocks in this course are unequal in height and two or sometimes three instead of one make up the height of the course. The inside face being exposed only at one point as far down as the first course between 13.00 m. and 24.70 m. east, it is not possible to say how much the thickness of the course varies, but where examined it has a minimum thickness of 0.79 m. (section p. 3031). The interstices in the south face are irregular, the pockets in these being filled with chips and small stones as may be seen in (Film 166-5, fig. 17).
