Exedra 5 stylobate walls

The entire length of the east stylobate wall rests in part on an earlier wall which wherever examined, reaches down to bedrock (see below p. under early walls). The thickness of the wall at the level of the facing orthostates is 0.87 m. or 0.05 m. less than those of exedrae 1-4 incl. Only 0.52 m. measuring from the east face is carried on the earlier wall, the [handwritten: ba]lance of 0.55 m. resting on its own rubble foundation. This where examined from 8.90 m. to 10.10 m. north on the west face (Film 169-) is much like the stylobate walls elsewhere and reaches down to bedrock (Section, p. ). The wall below the course of orthostates here projects from the west face of the wall sometimes as much as 0.30 m. (Film 169 - ). The course in the early wall on which the stylobate wall in part rests is faced with orthostates on either side the [handwritten: interior] of the wall being filled in with chips and small stones. It is only the ashlar blocks in the west face that carries the weight of the later wall (Film 169-12). At one point however, from 9.15 m. to 9.55 m. north the builders found these blocks no longer in situ but enclining considerably toward the east. Consequently they were able to lay only 0.12 m. of the thickness of their wall over it and so were compelled to make their foundation (Film 169- ). At 15.38 m. north the stylobate broad at this point (Film 169- ). This is in rubble and has a proper wall crosses another early wall. This is in rubble and has a proper face only on the north side. The stylobate wall passes over it at level - 0.38 m, and at 15.90 m. north crosses another wall at level - 0.33 m. (plan, fig. ). This early wall which is in rough masonry appears to have belonged to the same building whose east wall supports some of the thickness of the east stylobate wall whose south wall
