and the west wall of the exedra also rests on the early floor. Its tread is at level -0.08 m. This step consists mainly of a block which extents from within 0.05 m. of the end of the east orthostate to a point 0.04 m. short of a bit of extant wall plaster on the east face of the west wall. Small chips and stone fill the gap between it and the orthostate block. Similar chips of stone are wedged in between its west end and the plastered west wall, enough of the plaster being extant to show that the west wall had been plastered before the construction of this lower step. Step 2 is clearly not the original step but represents some later repair work in the stairway. It consists mainly of a srum of a half column set in a rubble foundation with its flat side serving as the tread. It is set back only 0.13 m. behind the rise of step 1 (Film 169 - ). This makes that tread of step 1 too narrow to have served as a proper step. The only plausible explanation would seem to be that the floor was still intact when step 2 was constructed and was almost if not at the same level as the top of the block which we have designated as step 1 at level +0.06 m. The top of step 2 is at level plus 0.14 m. We have just to the south of it what appears [handwritten: to] to be the top of an original step 2 at level plus 0.16 whose riser is 0.40 m. south of the riser of step 1. This would make the original step 1 and 2 here correspond exactly in position with steps 1 and 2 in the west stairway. Immediately behind what we may assume was the original second step we have what appears to have been the foundation for an original third step which extends another 0.42 m. south of our original step 2. Beyond this point in this area we have no masonry of any kind. If we restore a step here 0.265 m. in height it brings us to the computed floor level of the east platform of plus 0.425. Now the minimum height possible for the west platform is the topmost extant stone forming the foundation of the floor here which is at level plus 0.37 m. which
