be conjectured only on the basis of probability. There is a stone in the east wall of the exedra at level plus 0.29 m. which projects approxximately 0.14 m. west of the west face into what appears to be the [handwritten: Exmx] foundation for a third step (plat. fig. ; Film 169-4)
Both orthostates in the west arm of the west stylobate wall at the north end are in situ and preserved to their original height, the top of the course being at level plus 0.32 m. The east one rests on an early floor in lime concrete which extends from a line 0.20 m. south of the north face of the orthostate to the rubble foundation of a wall or pavement 0.30 m. north of it. Whatever once stood on this rubble [handwritten: h] foundation was dismantled down to the level of the early floor in order to lay the north wall of the South Building and the paved floor, not extant, between it and this west arm of the stylobate (Film 169-5-9 incl. but 9 in particular) As the orthostate was not carefully worked it was necessary to wedge in a good many small chips between it and this early floor which is at level -0.30 m. Although the top of the west orthostate is at the same level as the east one it is 0.07 m. less in height. It is founded on a low course of rubble. This rubble was laid over the is founded on a low course of rubble. This rubble was laid over the early floor as far as 0.20 m. south of the north face of the course of orthostates. Here the lime concrete of the floor curly up to cover an early wall in rough masonry the maximum height of the curl where examined at one point under the orthostate being at about 0.02 m. above the level of the floor. Part of the weight of the course of orthostates rest on this early wall which we shall find again in exedra 5 where it becomes the east arm of the east stylobate wall. In order to construct the west wall of exedra 4 the builders dismantled this early wall and cut through the early floor just west of the stairway (see plan fig. ) and the rubble foundation between it and the north wall. The first step of the stairway between the west end of the course of facing orthostates
