Stylobate wall of exedra 1 continued.

exedra is that up to the level of the pavement of the central floor both the east and west stylobate wall extends as far as the north wall. The east wall which has been exam[handwritten: m]ined on the east face at the north end down to level - 1.50 . is not bonded into the north wall, but was built up against it. It has been possible to examine the north end of the west wall only down to level - 0.69 m. where it is founded on what appears to be the top of an early wall. The west stylobate wall here is not bonded into the north wall but was built up against it. The top of the north end here supports the east end of the paved floor (still extant) between the west arm of the west stylobate and the north wall of the building (plan ). At the west end within the wall apposite the small west doorway in the north wall there is a small stairway which brought one up to the west arm of the [handwritten: Π] shaped platform. The two lower steps are still extant (film 168-9). The lower one is wedged in between the more westerly of the two facing orthostates at the north end of the platform and the west wall. The east end of the step consists of a block 0.59 m. in length by 0.26 m. in height. As it rests on the wall at approximately 0.03 m. below the level of the paved floor the actually height of the step is not more than 0.23 m. (Film 168-9). The stone between it and the west wall has a height of 0.13 m. The differences in height is made up by rubble construction beneath it. The alignment of this stone with the larger block is poor and makes one wonder whether this stairway is part of the original design (plan, fig. ). The upper step consists of a single block 0.81 m. in length which also rests on rubble to bring its top to the desired level of [handwritten: +] 0.26 m. There is no trace of a third step here which would seem to have been necessary to bring one up to the probable level of the floor (see p. ). The only preserved top of a facing orthostate is extant in the west stylobate
