Stylobate wall of exedra 1 continued.
wall at level 0.39 m. (see below p. ). The course of plinths which these once supported (see under exedrae 3, 4 and 5) is not extant but these would have brought the height of the stylobate wall to at least a level +0.47 m. As the course of plinths supported the coping blocks for the lime concrete floor of the ∩ shaped platform it is — inconceivable that the top step leading to this floor should not be at a higher level than +0.26 m. If we restore a third step equal in height to that of the average height of the first and second of 0.23 m. the top of this third step would be at level +0.49 m.(see p. ) This is a level well within the range of possibility.
The west stylobate wall where extant at the level of the facing orthostates consist of rough masonry but the stones are on an average somewhat larger than those in the wall below that level and there are occasional large worked blocks in this rubble backing of the visable face of the wall. These, it will be noted, (plan, fig. ) occur at fairly regular intervals and it is almost certain that they were placed here to re-enforce that part of the wall which supported the weight of columns which once stood on the stylobate above (see p. )
The north end of the east stylobate wall is preserved to a maximum height of -0.26 m. only. There is not the slightest trace of an east arm at this end such as is found in all the other exedrae but there is evidence that such once may have existed here. The evidence lies in a few rough stones which may have been the remains of the foundation of a step of a staircase such as the one in the west arm (Film 168-10). The stones extend from the east wall 0.81 m. to the west of it which is the length of step 2 in the west stairway and a probable length for
