… it is at level plus 0.77 m; and at 15.86 m. north it at level plus 0.84 m. [handwritten: The difference in height between the orthostates north of the buttress to those south of it of approximately 0.20 m. brings the top of the course to a consistant slope without any abrupt change in levels. This is the topmost extant course in the wall.]
It will be observed (elevation fig. [handwritten: Diagram, fig. 7]) that courses 1 and 2 at the south end of the wall donnot occur and that at this level here we have the wall only rough masonry. At 1.87 m north there is an orthostate running through the thickness of the wall (elevation fig. [handwritten: 5]) and projecting 0.54 m. east of the east face. It binds the west wall with another wall running east-west, which ante-dates the building of 101 A.D. There is a plinth under it occupying the width of the early wall of 0.71 m. These two blocks are in the face of the west wall and formed the southwest corner of an earlier building. [handwritten: Part of] of the west wall of the South Building, completed in 101 A.D.
clearly once served also as the west wall of this earlier building. It met the north wall of the earlier building at 16.00 m. north where course 4 terminates. Between 16.00 m. and 16.52 m. north there is a block in the wall the top of which is at level plus 0.38 m. It is not certain that it is part of the northwest corner of the earlier building but it occupies that space, its length being equal to the thickness of the west wall and its width to that of the early north wall which is still extant further to the east in exedra 5 (plan fig. 2). [handwritten: It is curious] however, that the wall beneath this block should be in rough masonry. Only the top is visable as it has not been possible to clear it on the west face owing to a pipe line on the east face, where it stands behind the flank of the stairway to the west
