rubble as may be observed in fig. • The foundation course of the south buttress is in rubble; the top of it is approximately at level -0.96 m. [handwritten: being only] a few centimeters above bedrock. The first course consists of rubble [handwritten: + backing] of an orthostate, on the west face, with rough masonry behind [handwritten: the excavated portion of orthostate] which fills in the space between it and the west wall. [handwritten: The west wall] the second course, composed of orthostates, two on the north and two on the south face, extends from the west face of the buttress to the east face of the west wall, the space between them being filled with rough stones.

The north buttress is built exactly in the same way, [handwritten: which stood at] but the orthostates that occurred at the northeast and southeast corners in the second course are not extant. As course 2 of the buttress was higher than the second course in the wall here it was not necessary to remove any stone from this course in the wall to admit the buttress. This is the only notable difference between the two buttresses.

Course 3 consists of plinths which occupy the entire width of the wall. They average, with slight variation, about 0.27 m. in height. South of the south buttress the top of the course is at an approximate level of -0.02m. North of the south buttress it is at the approximate level of plus 0.23 m. This course, as stated above, is interrupted by the buttresses in order to admit their second course into the wall.

Course 4 consists of orthostates and is built like course 2. It is extant in part only from 3.76 m. to 16.00 m. north (see plan fig. 2). The height of the orthostates south of the south buttress is approximately 0.72 m; north of the south buttress their height is about 0.53 m. [The top of the course at 4.50 m. north is at level plus 0.74 m; at 12.58 m. north … continues
