platform of exedra 5 which is built up against it. North of this block occurs the extension of the west wall of the earlier building to the northwest corner of the enlarged building of 101 A-D [handwritten: not] It is not bonded into the north wall of the later building. The wall here is in rubble and its width is only 0.56 m. The west jamb of a doorway in the north wall rests against its east inside face. This jamb was cut down to level plus 0.40 m. at 0.38 m. above the threshold. Later a rubble revetment thickened the west wall between the block which occupies the northwest corner of the early building and this jamb, making the wall for this lineal distance equal in thickness to the west wall south of this point. A bit of this rubble revetment was found, over the hacked off top of the jamb, The rubble revetement is founded on the lime concrete floor of the early building at level - 0.28 m. and its extant top is at level plus 0.43 m. Its purpose is not understood unless it was to conceal the south face of the west jamb after the doorway was filled in as it was, and probably at this time. The lower step leading up to the west platform of exedra 5 was placed up against the revetement. Clearly this happened only after the doorway discontinued from use. After the jamb was cut down the doorway was filled in with rubble.

All this very probably coincided with the building of a circular stairway at the west end of the South Building portico up against the east face of the rubble extension of the west wall to the northwest corner of the portico. This extension is founded on bedrock which at the north end is at level -0.19 m. The highest point in the wall here is the top of the south end of a large threshold block which is at level plus 0.77 m. The top of the wall below it is at level plus 0.50 m. and extended from the north face the threshold block was 2.60 m. and extended from the north face
