The second course from 3.30 m. to 15.86 m. north, except where interrupted by the south buttress (elevation fig. ) is faced on either sides with orthostates measuring from 0.70 m. to 1.28 m. in length, the space between these within the wall being filled with clips and small stones. Their height south of the south buttress is approximately 0.45m.; and their height between the the course is at level -0.31m.; and their height between the buttresses is approximately 0.60 m. where the top of the course is at level -0.07 m. The thickness of the wall above the foundation where intact is about 0.72 m. North of the north buttress (elevation fig. ) the height of the orthostates of course 2 is approximately 0.56 m. where the top of the course is at level -0.04 m.
The north buttress (elevation fig. ) was built up against the face of the first course of the west wall, but is bonded into the wall above this level, a block both in the second and third course having been removed in order to admit the second course of the buttress into the wall. There is, however, a marked irregularity in the construction of the west wall behind the south buttress which suggests the possibility of re-construction There is an orthostate here which is placed much lower than the line of orthostates on either side of the south buttress. Elsewhere the course of rubble below the lower course of orthostates serves as a leveling course which varies in height according to the level of bedrock.
