The West Wall. [handwritten: cleared]
The west wall, wherever [handwritten: examined] is founded on bedrock [handwritten: (elevation, fig. 8)] except at the north end where it meets a wall which antedates the building of 101 A.D. (at 1.60 m. north of the s.w. corner the bedrock is at level -1.36 m; at 8.85 m. north it is at level -0.96 m.; and at 14.20 m. north it is at level -0.58 m. These levels are taken at the foot of the west face of the wall.) The foundation course consists of rubble and projects on the average about 0.07 m. from the west face of the wall [handwritten: cleared] between the s.w. corner and 6.58 m. north at which point it terminates under a buttress. On the east inside face it barely projects anywhere beyond the first course in the wall. North of the buttress the first course serves as the foundation course. The top of the foundation at 1.60 m. north of the s.w.corner is at level -1.12 m; and at 6.58 m. it is at level -1.06 m. where it disappears under the buttress (elevation, fig. [handwritten: ~]).
From 3.30 m. to 15.86 m. north of the s.w.corner the first course consists of rubble with an occasional roughly dressed block in the west face of the wall. The top of the first course at 3.30 m. north of the s.w. corner is at level -0.80 m; at 8.85 m. north it is -0.67 m.; at 14.20 m. north it is interrupted by the upper surface of bedrock on which at this point the second course is founded at level -0.58 m. At 15.86 m. north it is at level -0.54 m. where it projects about 0.05 m. west of the course above it and where it serves in fact as the foundation of the wall. It meets here the top of the foundation of another wall at the same level of -0.54 m. (plan, fig. [handwritten: ~]) which terminates against the west face of the west wall.
