PROJECT: (importance, feasibility, etc.):] The University Museum assigned the project of the publication of the mosaics of the Acropolis of Kourion in Cyprus and associated structures or establishments to Dr. Rupp several years ago. The mosaics are early Christian, in fact of a kind of transitional period from paganism to Christianity, in the late 4th or early 5th century A.D. A number are inscribed (the inscriptions are published in T. B. Mitford's The Inscriptions of Kourion published by your Society) and they are in general of very high quality. The structures, though not pretentious architecturally, seem very unusual and their publication a worthy contribution to knowledge of architecture of the period.
Printed: APPLICANT (Qualifications, general record or promise):
Dr. Rupp is an excellent scholar in whom we have every confidence for a good publication. His work has been delayed by a variety of circumstances including a very demanding schedule at his university. He now envisages the possibility of working in a concentrated way on our project and we feel he should be provided with the means to do so. The work for which he requires assistance, primarily for conservation of objects concerned with the chronology of his mosaics and structures is basic. Modern scrutiny of the pertinent chronological material, in view of more recent information, may well yield greater precision.
We especially would like to complete our obligations of publication of our excavations in Cyprus, which took place in the twenty year period between 1933 and 1953, so that we can proceed to other undertakings. Dr. Rupp's undertaking certainly has the full blessing of the Department of Antiquities in Cyprus.
