January 26, 1978Dear Saul:

I am glad to hear that you are able to work on Bamboula. We will be glad to have it published since it is one of the few remaining gaps.

I have contemplated your request for photographs. Certainly I will be glad to expedite them. There are, however, a couple of problems. One is your remark "There seem to be 3 rolls with exposures 1-33, 1-29 and 1-43 respectively, and I have no prints of 1941." I don't understand this. Perhaps you could clarify.

The other has to do with the actual printing. Years ago there would have been no problem. We would automatically be able to provide whatever phots. were needed free of charge to the author. Several years ago, however, the Director decided that all phot. work had to be paid for in cash, even in the case of authors working on Museum publications. The solution which has been evolved is to ask our authors to request in their applications for grants funds for photography or for whatever else was needed. If necessary the phot. work could be done in advance of the application for a grant and the work paid for when the grant materialized. Or so it happened under the previous regime with David Rupp's mosaic phots.

With regard to the Bamboula notebooks the 7 volumes (Pete's III-IX) are here. I can undertake to supply you with Xeroxes of them which should be very usable since Pete's writing is so clear. Because of losses in the past we don't let our original diaries travel.

In your grant application, if as I assume you will be applying for one, you should apply for sufficient funds to cover anything needed for study or for preparation of manuscript. So far it would be for this photography and the Xeroxing. Later on it might well be for a typist, typist's supplies etc. This was the arrangement I had with R. Scranton for his work on Apollo and so far as I know he was satisfied. If you are satisfied to go ahead on this understanding let me know and I will then organize the photography and Xeroxing. You might let me know also of any deadline you have in mind for these things.

Good Fortune -
