Dear Ghost: Your letter did indeed startle me. I must say that getting into Area E problems after all this time was like putting my hand into fire. First, I had a hard time finding any of my notes on it because I had had a big cleanup of my office about a year ago and hid these well away; in fact, I still haven't re-located the Bam-Kal correspondence file which was carefully tied up in a brown bag and put somewhere! In any case, after much travail partly caused by the fact that many of the notes are labelled with all three systems you mentioned - and more - I have finally recovered the scheme used and it is considerably different from the last one you have:

Benson I: later phase is VII q.v. II: later phase is VI q.v. III IV V VI: later phase of II VII: Later phase of I VIII

Daniel I II III IV V VI II (LC IIII) VII

Actually I have a strong feeling that I talked to you - whether it was ever written down in a letter I can't check on - about all this, perhaps during a visit to Columbia; I simply don't think I would have altered a previous scheme so drastically without consulting you. Certainly, this represented a great deal of hard wrestling with the material and I hope that you can understand and agree with it. Of course, the area is very hard to interpret and it would have been better if we could have worked together right up to publication. But if you feel you have to suggest another interpretation, I will be able to understand that too. I could send xeroxes of some of the stratification notes to ASCA; you may even have copies of some or most of these but without my notations. Let me know if you really think that would help. We were in Greece for 6 weeks in the earlier part of the summer and I am now answering last minute queries of the editor on Corinth XV, 3 just before it goes to press. If you are returning to this country after Sept. 30 and want to talk about the ms. perhaps you could come up to Amherst (4 hours by bus from NY). You could stay overnight with us. Hoping that this helps somewhat.

Best regards,

J. L. Benson

PS. Seeing that it took 9 days for your letter to reach here I am taking the precaution of sending a duplicate to ASCS to await arrival.
