Dear Jack:
The ghost rises and walks, clattering. With this same carrier, I'm sending to Roger Edwards the text for all of the Bamboula architecture except Area E. That is the reat stinker and I've left it for last; I think I now have the courage to tackle it.
When I began to read what you had to say about Area E, I realized that I was not at all sure what numbering system you had used for the Area E houses. When we last corresponded about it, the scheme you suggested was as follows:
Daniel I II III IV V VI VII Weinberg I-II VII III VI VIII IV V VI Benson I-II VII III IV VIII V VI
However, in RDAC, 1970, pp. 32-33, in speaking of the Hearth Area and of your 1954 dig, you speak of this all in connection with House VIII. Not in any scheme was this farthest west house numbered VIII - it is your VI and my V on the scheme above. This has caused me to wonder of you have ended with an entirely different scheme and, if so, what it is. Since I am hoping to work on this area in the four weeks remaining to me here, it is most important that I know what numbering system you did use. I'd be most grateful if you could let me know as quickly as possible. I'll leave Jerusalem for the ASCS in Athens on Aug. 13 and then will be in Greece until Sept. 30.
I'll go on with my work on the houses of Area E, especially since houses I to III were so numbered by both of us in the above scheme. If changes are needed, they can be made later. I'd like to coordinate with your published accounts; just must know how.
Meanwhile, all the best.
I hope to hear from you soon.
Sincerely,
