At sea. As from 2 The Mount London N.W. 3
March 25, 1973Dear Roger, I have been very remiss in not acknowledging before your letters of Feb. 16 with the Xeroxes of pages in the Fales notebooks. They arrived just as we were leaving for Cyprus and I was so frantically busy during our visit there (what with gathering material for my paper and dealing with a consignment of belongings once in our St Hilarion cottage and now gracing the little house we have bought in Paphos), that correspondence went by the board.
The Fales notes are not crystal clear, by any means, but the essential information is on the first of the pages you sent: 125 - "Rooms with evidence for dating of palace.... Under mosaic lifted Room O: C2365 Theodosius II... " Even if his Room O is not that of the Ktisis buet, as I suspect it is, the mosaic decoration seems to be all of one period, both in the baths proper and in the rooms bearing the Eustolios inscriptions, and if a coin of Theodosius II was found beneath any part of it, it cannot have been laid before 408.
On our return to Athens, where we had only a few days before taking ship to Marseille, I found the photograph of the basilica floor mosaic fragment. Very good in the circumstances. For this also many thanks.
We fly to Dulles from London on April 9, and hope to see you before we leave the States again on the last day of May.
All my thanks + good wishes
Peter
