EPISKOPI LIMASSOL CYPRUS
15 January 1956Dear Jack:
I am afraid it has taken two months to execute your commission about twisted columns. There have been other things to do and I have no car. Anyway I send particulars of four columns and their photographs. It seems clear that the Demeter columns differ from those of Curium House and the Theatre in material, diameter and channels.
It is so long since I saw Peter that I haven't had a chance to ask him about permission to mention the Basilica twisted column but will do so soon, I hope.
Your other commission was carried out by handing £17 to Socrates with Lori's approval. He had already gone back to school so I suppose they managed to raise the wind somehow.
Even when schools here are not closed by the Government or the school authorities, there has been so much absenteeism organized by the pupils themselves that the interruption of studies and the loss of the habit of study and the spread of indiscipline will have a very bad effect on the present younger generation. It is all very sad. Lori's school is closed by order of the Headmaster on account of indiscipline. Antonaki's Gymnasium is shut by order of the Governor since a British soldier driving past was killed by a bomb thrown from the schools but the are being made to agree on terms for reopening schools but the masters are afraid to impose discipline even if they wanted to.
I had a very interesting time in Turkey - nearly three months, including a week in Istanbul. My Turkish houseboy left me without notice to get a better paid job with an Army contractor (the day after he broke most of my propelling pencils &c - out of curiosity, I suppose). The Chrysilios family is here most of the time and his English is coming on quite well and he is learning to draw pots &c. He is now as tall as I am and rather brighter.
My best wishes to you both for the New Year.
