P.S. It is not possible without considerable excavation to count the number of grooves as the column is sunk in the ground and both ends are badly damaged. I have counted an estimated half circumference and made it 11; Chrysilios's estimated half circel is 12, so the number is 22, 23 or 24 for the whole circle. The tiresome lad then pointed out that there is another half sunk twisted column in thick bush nearby all of the dimensions of which seem to be smaller than that measured. It would cost about £1 to clear sufficiently to get certain (I mean accurate) dimensions, including the number of grooves of both columns (and that is about £1 more than I have at the moment).
