EPISKOPI LIMASSOL CYPRUS

27 February 1955Dear Jack,

Thanks for your letter of 13 January and for the kind thoughts - which are reciprocated. I am glad to know that you are comfortably settled and that Linda has something to do to keep her away from the shops and cocktail bars.

You will no doubt have heard that your commission has been executed. There is very little news from here. We were a bit surprised to learn that the Paphos explosive smuggling seems to have been politically motivated - we all thought it was for fishing.

The sketch of the column fluting is put at the top for convenience. I thought the ruin was of a temple of Demeter but your "Diana" may be right. Have you got particulars of the similar column about 100 yards south of the Basilica?

It is Sunday; Antonakis, Loris and Nearchi are playing pingpong downstairs. These is a bit of carnival atmosphere about as Greek lent starts to-morrow and all the village picnics on Yerakarka or thereabouts. Herodotos has left me to better himself with a contractor - I think it is as well. Nearchi once more works for me. Socrates has just got a job with the Army as a fireguard. After six months he gets £1 a day like his colleague Sophronios. It will do him good to sweat off some of that fat. [handwritten: &]There is too much fried food in that house). Loris is getting bloated too. Chrysillios thanks you for your message and asks me to convey his best wishes to you both. I had words with him yesterday evening for thinking of going to an evening party wearing brown shoes with a dark suit [handwritten: &] just because his black shoes were being repaired). He overcame the difficulty in a typically Chrysillian manner by borrowing [handwritten: my] black shoes.

My respectful salaams to you both,
