Curium

October 9, 1953Dr. G. Roger Edwards Curium Excavations Episkopi Limassol, Cyprus

Dear Roger:

I am very sorry for the long delay in replying to your letter of the 24th but I have had some difficulty in getting hold of Mr. Ewing. Now I am sure I can reply point for point to your questions.

1. Mr. Ewing sent instructions to Sir Panyotis on September 25, that is just after your letter was written, which gives him the necessary instructions. This means that, working with him, you are to get to us the final list of what belongs to us; what belongs to the estate; what Mrs. Ewing wants; and what we wish to buy from the estate. This list is supposed to have the evaluations of all the material. According to Mr. Ewing, as soon as we have these agreed lists from you and Sir Panyotis, Mr. Ewing and I are to agree on whether the estate can put up enough additional money for us to buy from the estate all the things you want and retain it there until Mr. Ewing and I have the lists and arrange for the purchase from the estate with money which they will put up over and above the stated bequest.

2. Mr. Ewing seems anxious to get rid of all that livestock just as fast as possible and has so instructed Sir Panyotis.

3. In making up your lists of expenditures for the account of the estate, that is expenses out of the Curium Fund to maintain the animals, the servants and so forth: This listing of expenditures out of the Curium Fund should make it possible to return to that fund the $600 supposed to be used for procuring and shipping the mosaic. MMr. Ewing and I felt that this matter should not be left to you and Panyotis because we here could not determine what could legitimately be purchased against the estate. I hope this will return the $600 to the Museum funds for the mosaic.

4. Certainly anything purchased out of the Curium Excavations account is Museum property. All money from that account came through the University as a contribution from George.
