Curium Excavations Episkopi Limassol, Cyprus

17 Dec 1953Dear Fro:

I was glad to receive yours of the 10th with the news regarding our purchase of the items from the estate. I have discussed this with Sir Panyotis. He tells me that he has written to Mr. Ewing pointing out that the money should be paid to the Cypriote estate and are subject to Cypriote inheritance taxes. Mr. Ewing probably has brought this to your attention already. If this has to be done I presume it would be most expeditious for you to send a check directly to Sir Panyotis as administrator of the estate.

Sir Panyotis feels that I should have a power of attorney from the Museum in order to act for it in receiving the money from the bequests when it comes through. I enclose on a separate sheet the wording which he specifies.

He is making muttering noises at the moment as to whether or not the funds on deposit in George's personal account in the bank in Limassol should really come to us or not. I trust he will decide in our favor, as it is a very appreciable amount.

Peace and quiet reign here for a change now. I am going briefly to Athens for the Christmas holidays. While there I will investigate the possibilities of a replacement of Mrs. Oberlin in case you decide that Ellen cannot be spared next summer.

I have written Dick Stillwell about the theatre-palace matter. I have made him rather a more generous offer than would ordinarily be justified, but I felt the important thing was to get someone good and get the job done. I think you feel that way too.

My best holiday greetings to you and Mrs. Rainey.

Sincerely,
